Rescue Efforts Ongoing After 7-Storey Building Collapses in Kahawa West

A search and rescue operation commenced Sunday morning in Nairobi's Kahawa West area following the collapse of a seven-storey building.

The incident, which occurred around 9:00 AM, has deeply affected the local community. While police are uncertain about potential casualties, they are conducting a thorough search to ensure no one remains trapped in the rubble. Reports indicate that residents had identified structural weaknesses in the building before its collapse. This early detection prompted a community-led evacuation effort, which likely prevented a more catastrophic outcome.

Video footage captured by witnesses shows people urgently warning others to evacuate moments before the structure gave way. Nairobi police chief Adamson Bungei has confirmed that an evacuation has taken place, stating, "We are not sure if there were people still inside, but I know there was an evacuation that happened. They knew it was weak." In response to the emergency, a multi-agency team including the Kenya Red Cross, police, and other emergency services swiftly mobilized to the site.

These teams are working diligently to search for any individuals who may be trapped and to provide necessary assistance. As rescue efforts continue, authorities are assessing the extent of the damage and potential casualties. The Kenya Red Cross has reported that several families are feared to be trapped within the collapsed structure.

Emergency services are operating around the clock to ensure the safety of all those involved. The local community has demonstrated remarkable solidarity in the wake of this disaster with volunteers coming forward to support rescue efforts by providing essential supplies such as food and water to both the rescue teams and affected families.
