Kindiki Adopts Ruto's Pulpit Strategy to Push State Programs

Newly appointed Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has embraced religious platforms as a communication channel mere weeks after taking office.

This initiative directly addresses President William Ruto's expressed desire for enhanced governmental messaging, following Kindiki's October 31, 2024 swearing-in ceremony. During the inauguration, President Ruto specifically called upon Kindiki's intellectual capabilities and articulation skills to help convey the administration's achievements and initiatives. "I need your voice, I need your intellect," Ruto emphasized, acknowledging his previous sense of isolation in communicating government programs.

Kindiki has swiftly responded to this mandate following Ruto's established practice of utilizing church services for public engagement. His inaugural appearance as Deputy President at Jesus Palace of Praise Church in Mwatate, Taita Taveta, on Sunday coincided with President Ruto's attendance at a separate service in Kakamega County. During this appearance, Kindiki addressed key economic developments, notably highlighting the strengthening of the Kenyan shilling against the US dollar, which has improved from Sh165 to Sh127.

The Deputy President emphasized the practical implications of this economic improvement, particularly for lower-income citizens. His message included acknowledgment of public patience during economic reforms and outlined the government's ongoing efforts to enhance living standards for all Kenyans. This approach builds upon a well-established tradition in Kenyan politics, where religious gatherings serve as platforms for political discourse and public engagement.

Kindiki's predecessor, Rigathi Gachagua, along with President Ruto, frequently employed this strategy, particularly during and after the 2022 electoral period, often attributing their political success to divine intervention. While Kindiki's previous role as Interior Cabinet Secretary focused primarily on security matters, particularly in regions affected by banditry and terrorism, his personal connection to religious institutions runs deep. As the son of a Kenya Methodist bishop, he brings authentic religious credentials to his new role which may enhance his effectiveness in this communication strategy.

His recent appointment as deputy party leader of the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) further solidifies his position as a key figure in advancing President Ruto's vision. During a UDA National Executive Committee meeting, Kindiki reaffirmed his commitment to supporting the President's agenda and promoting national unity.
