The Siaya County Stadium is poised for its grand opening on January 2, 2025, an event anticipated to be attended by Kenyan President William Ruto and Ugandan President Yoweri Museveni.
The announcement has been made by Siaya Governor James Orengo who has emphasized the event's importance for the region. In preparation for the opening, Governor Orengo, alongside Interior Principal Secretary Raymond Omolo, recently conducted an inspection of the stadium facilities.
They expressed confidence in the arrangements for the three-day celebration, which will kick off with the fourth annual Piny Luo festival on December 31, as guests are expected to start arriving on December 30. A key feature of the opening ceremony will be a friendly match between Gor Mahia FC and Kitara FC, taking place at the new stadium, which has a capacity of 20,000.
Governor Orengo highlighted the historic dimension of the occasion, particularly with the attendance of two heads of state. Dr. Omolo evaluated the preparations and confirmed that the stadium meets all necessary standards.
He shared optimism regarding the event's success and encouraged public attendance, highlighting its role in promoting cultural diversity and national unity. Former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, a candidate for the African Union Commission chair position, is also expected to attend the festivities.
The Piny Luo organizing committee, led by Kisumu Deputy Governor Matthew Owili, has crafted activities to celebrate cultural heritage, including traditional cuisine, sports events, and music performances. The Piny Luo festival, an annual event, will primarily occur at Migwena Stadium in Bondo sub-county before culminating at the Siaya County Stadium on January 2.
