Renowned Kenyan marathoner Joan Nancy Rotich has shared a distressing account of her financial exploitation.
She reveals how she was deceived out of the millions she earned from her successful running career. Once celebrated for her achievements in marathons such as the Taipei Marathon in China and the Jakarta Marathon in Indonesia, Rotich now faces significant financial hardship. In a heartfelt video, She details her investments and the betrayal she experienced from her former boyfriend and her agent.
She entrusted her earnings to her ex-partner, whom she believed would support her, only to discover he had claimed ownership of two vehicles purchased with her prize money and registered them in his name. Furthermore, a house built for what was intended to be their future together was also taken by her ex-partner. Adding to her trials, Rotich discloses that her agent took advantage of her trust by persuading her to deposit her Sh1.6 million prize money from the 2018 Doha Marathon into his bank account.
Currently residing in Germany, the agent has become difficult to reach, further complicating Rotich's attempts to recover her funds. In light of her situation, the Athletes Welfare Initiative Kenya has expressed its commitment to assist Rotich in seeking justice and providing support during these challenging times. Despite these setbacks, the determined athlete remains focused on her goal of continuing her marathon career, with hopes of making a significant comeback.
Rotich's experience highlights a broader issue within the athletic community, particularly for female athletes who frequently face similar exploitation. In response, the World Athletics Council, through its Athletes' Commission and Gender Leadership Taskforce, has emphasized the urgency of tackling these challenges. Their strategic plan includes raising awareness, providing education, and advocating for systemic change to create safer environments for athletes.
The Athletes' Commission has also proposed forming partnerships with relevant organizations to combat gender-based violence in sports. Through these collaborative efforts, they aim to drive meaningful change and provide support for athletes facing similar adversities worldwide.
