Belgut Member of Parliament Nelson Koech has proposed the inclusion of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga in the Kenya Kwanza government.
This recommendation arises in the aftermath of Raila’s recent defeat in the African Union chairperson election, held on Saturday in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia. Mahmoud Ali Youssouf of Djibouti emerged victorious in the election, securing the chairmanship after a comprehensive voting process that concluded in the seventh round when he received 33 votes. Raila Odinga was eliminated in the sixth round after consistently trailing Youssouf throughout the earlier ballots.
In light of Raila's loss, MP Koech has emphasized that this moment could represent a pivotal opportunity for the seasoned politician. He says, "The loss is a good opportunity to set the stage for another moment. I think it should give birth to another moment."
Koech points to Raila's extensive experience in Kenya's political landscape, arguing that the government could benefit significantly from his expertise. Koech further references the National Dialogue Committee (NADCO) report as a potential framework for integrating Raila into the government's structure. He stresses that the focus should primarily be on the contributions Raila could make, rather than the provision of a formal position.
"What will Raila do with his energy, wisdom, and experience? I think we in Kenya Kwanza should accommodate that experience, the counsel that he will give us. We probably will look at the NADCO report and I don't think it's about positions for Raila. It's really about his resources as a person," he notes.
Additionally, Koech commends the performance of various Cabinet Secretaries affiliated with Raila’s camp, acknowledging their valuable contributions to the government thus far. Raila Odinga’s defeat in the recent election has prompted calls for his return to local politics, a move many believe is crucial for revitalizing his party, the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), and the national political landscape. Analysts suggest that Raila, formerly keen on a continental role as chair of the African Union Commission (AUC), is likely to re-engage with local politics and reclaim his position within the ODM.
Barack Muluka, a political analyst, indicates that Raila is expected to convene an ODM meeting soon to reaffirm his leadership within the party. This shift to a local focus comes in stark contrast to Raila's previous comments about stepping back from Kenyan politics to concentrate on broader continental issues. The AUC chair position typically has a four-year term, which can be renewed once. Had Raila won, it would have positioned him out of contention for the 2027 presidential election.
He had previously announced, “I am not going to be very active in Kenyan politics henceforth,” signaling a planned shift in focus. In the wake of his loss, discussions surrounding Raila’s potential successors have gained momentum, with several key political figures eyeing his influence. This speculation was fueled by President William Ruto’s support for Raila's candidacy, a move many interpreted as a strategic effort to reduce Raila’s local political footprint and consolidate Ruto’s own support bases ahead of the next electoral cycle.
Legal expert and political commentator Elias Mutuma highlights the significance of Raila's following, particularly in Nyanza, suggesting that it could offer critical backing to Ruto as he works to secure the 2027 election. With the dynamics shifting post-election, Raila's potential return to local politics introduces a complex layer to the 2027 election landscape. Some analysts believe he could assume a kingmaker role, influencing candidates' fortunes with his backing or, conversely, disrupt the existing power balance by contesting for the presidency himself.
Political observers, including Martin Andati, speculate that Raila may return to the fray with renewed vigor: “If that happens, that will completely change the dynamics for all these players, especially Ruto."
Raila’s enduring influence in Kenyan politics is underscored by his extensive support across several key regions, including Nyanza, Western, Nairobi, Northeastern, and parts of the Coast. This extensive backing has the potential to significantly impact the upcoming elections, asserting his status as a pivotal figure in any emerging political strategies.
"What will Raila do with his energy, wisdom, and experience? "
If Raila is the only one who has that knowledge in Kenya, then find him a place in Government. If there are other Kenyans, especially those that have new technolgical, Educational backgrounds in all areas of our economy, then NO NO NO. We cannot be stuck with the same old garbage that has not worked in Kenya. Why must we worry about billionaires who are in their 70s and 80s, with old ideas while we have kenyans in their 20s,30s,40s and 50s who have newer ideas of improving the economy? Yes, Raila may be a seasoned politician and that is where the problem is.Kenya needs less politician and corrupt people.
Why do many Kenyans feel Raila must have wo the African Position that was won by the guy from Djbouti? Coz this guy has a fresh mind, fresh ideas and more global than regional. My 2 cents!
