Catholic Priest Who Hosted Gachagua Found Murdered Along Nakuru-Nairobi Highway

A high-stakes investigation is underway in Nakuru County following the gruesome murder of Catholic priest John Maina, whose body was discovered on May 15 near Kikopey along the Nakuru-Nairobi highway.

Maina, a respected figure at Igwamiti Catholic Church in the Nyahururu Diocese, was found approximately 50 kilometres from his parish. The grim discovery has ignited outrage and demands for justice from both his congregation and the broader community. Initial findings suggest that Maina may have been murdered at a different location before his body was disposed of in Kikopey.

The Gilgil Directorate of Criminal Investigations (DCI), led by boss Rahamad Wasilwa, is meticulously analysing leads. The investigation includes a thorough examination of Maina’s last known contacts and a detailed review of his mobile phone records, with cooperation from telecommunications provider Safaricom, to uncover his final communications and any potential threats he may have encountered.

Adding complexity to the case is the disappearance of Maina’s vehicle, which authorities suspect was used to transport his remains. The missing vehicle suggests a degree of premeditation by the perpetrators, who appear to have taken measures to conceal their crime. The results of a post-mortem examination are eagerly awaited, as they are expected to provide crucial insights into the cause and manner of Maina’s death.

Maina's death has deeply affected his congregation, who remember him as a compassionate leader and devoted servant. Parishioners have shared recollections of his unwavering commitment to the community, citing his spiritual guidance and material support for those in need. His sermons, characterised by insightful reflections on morality and social responsibility, delivered with both humour and warmth, resonated deeply with his flock.

The call for justice has been amplified by prominent figures, including Nyandarua Senator John Methu, who recently attended a service at Maina's church alongside former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua. The event, which commemorated the church's 25th anniversary, included a fundraising effort to purchase a parish van. Senator Methu has expressed his condolences and urged law enforcement to expedite the investigation and bring the perpetrators to justice.
