“I’m Ready to Come Back Home” - Winnie Odinga Signals Political Comeback

Kenya on Sunday bid farewell to former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, who was laid to rest at his family’s home in Kang’o Kajaramogi, Siaya County, in a ceremony attended by thousands, including top political leaders.

Winnie Odinga, Raila’s daughter and a Member of the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA), addressed mourners during the funeral, signalling a possible return to national politics. Turning to President William Ruto, she thanked him for his support during the family’s loss and declared, “I’m ready to come back home,” a statement widely seen as an indication of her future political intentions. President

Ruto, seated beside Ida Odinga, responded with a measured smile, highlighting the significance of the moment. Winnie began her EALA term in December 2022 following her election by Parliament. Her service in the regional assembly is expected to continue until late 2027.

While her role in Arusha marked a key stage in her political career, her recent remarks point to a potential shift towards domestic leadership. Her public composure during the mourning period has earned widespread respect, and many observers now view her as a possible successor to her father’s political legacy.

The funeral also underscored internal discussions within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM), the party Raila founded and led for many years. His sister, Ruth Odinga, shared a final conversation with him in which he urged party unity. She appealed to members to remain together and protect the values Raila stood for, as debate over future leadership intensifies.

To maintain stability, ODM’s National Executive Committee appointed Siaya Senator Oburu Oginga, Raila’s elder brother, as Acting Party Leader. The announcement, made on Thursday, is intended to guide the party through the transition period, though questions remain over its long-term leadership and direction.

Energy Cabinet Secretary Opiyo Wandayi reaffirmed ODM’s commitment to its cooperation agreement with President Ruto’s administration. Speaking in Bondo, he said the partnership reflects Raila’s legacy of dialogue and national engagement. The agreement was formed earlier this year following nationwide protests over the rising cost of living and contested fiscal policies, positioning Raila as a moderating influence in national politics.

The ceremony also included moments of personal remembrance. Raila Junior, dressed in white, explained that he chose the colour to celebrate his father’s life rather than mourn his passing.

“Today, we are not mourning, we are celebrating a life well lived,” he told mourners.

Raila Odinga leaves behind a legacy that shaped national politics for decades.
