Kenyan Catholic priest, Father Paul Ogola has reportedly been suspended by the church leadership for rapping in church.

The 45-year-old priest has been using rap music to urge youth to stop using drugs and to get involved in environmental and social justice issues. He recently hit media headlines over his unique way of preaching the gospel and discouraging social vices such as drug abuse.

“I use the rap music to bring … youths to the church. Thereafter, I bring them to Christ,” Father Paul said in a recent interview with a local media.

“I want to rescue millions of youths who are leaving the Church because we are not taking care of their interests. We want to keep them in church. They can sing, rap and dance for Christ as they learn other life changing strategies."

The Diocese of Homa Bay has now suspend the Priest for 12 months, with effect from June 3rd, 2018.  Fr Charles Kochiel, the Judicial Vicar of the inter-diocesan tribunal of the Archdiocese of Kisumu said Ogola was suspended over his conduct.

“We have suspended him for a year to give him time to reconsider his ways…every institution has its own code of conduct.”

Kochiel said Fr Ogola should have consulted with the bishops "to find out if what he was doing was in accordance with the Church doctrine.”

Fr ‘Masaa’ as he is commonly referred to in Rapogi parish would shift to his rapping regalia-black shorts, a white shirt and a headband, at the end of the mass and begin his rap sessions.

Dim-sighted, hypocritical leadership! Fr. Ogola has found a better way of reaching the youth...Go Fr. Masaa!

  2. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

I concur with you JustMe 100%. INSTEAD they should Suspend those Rapers; not Rappers.

  3. MugikuyuJun 23, 2018

Don't see anything wrong with that if he is working on rescuing the youth from addiction and mentoring them. Where is the pope in all this? This is a church which has sodomized children world over, priests in Kenya have hidden wives and children at every corner of the country and running small time businesses for their personal gain. This is a church which actively engaged in slavery, took the back seat during civil rights movement and continues to take a back seat as Africa struggles to find its place in Africa. A black man by the way will never be pope and a woman will never be priest. A stone age church that should be expelled from Africa.

  4. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

Thank you Comrade Mugikuyu for Joining me in Moral PolicemanShip on Mwakilishi. To you Maxiley!

  5. GeojohJun 23, 2018

I don't think the Christian religion was meant for Africans. African culture is a vibrant culture and our African Traditional Society incorporated music in all aspects of our worship. They gave us the bible and they took our land. Christianity is unafrican. We don't need laws of the bible to dictate to us how to behave. We have our brains to tell us what's wrong and right!

  6. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

Geojoh FORGET these Blind suspenders. For James 1 27 says that "Religion that is pure and undefiled before God, the Father, is this: to visit orphans and widows in their affliction, and to keep oneself unstained from the world." These unnecessary Suspenders need to visit the Afflicted instead of Punishing this Priest for no goid reason.

Catholic...not that I know...where is the song uninyunsie maji...bwana..not iyo rap song..well traps are everywhere..only Prayer overcomes

This is not the way and l don't support. May be he would have been advised but not suspended.

  10. Caleb ApuoyoJun 23, 2018

Things have changed and Rev Father is using the dispensation of time to bring more youths to church, why suspend him?? Noo too baaad

  11. MaxileyJun 23, 2018

If I were him, I would just start my own church. What would he miss in the Catholic Church anyway? After all, the protestants separated from the Catholic Church partly over interpretation of their doctrines;not to mention that the Catholic Church was pretty corrupt at the time. Not that they are Holier than thou today, but they are plagued with new problems,in addition to those old ones.
You dont have to belong to a denomination to spread the word of God.Can those suspending him prove to the masses that this is not the way God works mysterious?

  12. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

I agree with you Maxiley. Wow!!!

  13. maxileyJun 24, 2018

@ guest1, if only, I could make you see my view on homosexuality:)

  14. omondi kapaJun 23, 2018

I knew fr masaa like 15yrs ago when he was still serving at nyalienga parish. the man is very passionate about the youths and the elderly.

fr ochiel, if you can't beat him, plz join. masaa all the way√

  15. ImaraJun 23, 2018

History is beautiful. You have to like it. Why? Lack of enough historical background in you makes you a robot of anybody crooked ideology.

It was the Roman Catholic Pope Nicholas the 5th who said that " Africans have no souls, therefore, they should be sold as slaves."

Any African who is a catholic clearly indicates that they are ignorant of history. The Catholic Church is a cult. Run away from it!

  16. PresenteJun 23, 2018

He he don't be so quick to say that.well, for starters I think you lack experience, facts and knowledge about the Catholic church.Everybody is a sinner and we won't judge the pope for saying that all we care is to receive the holy sacraments, preaching(which is not prosperity gospel) and wait for the kingdom of God.

  17. MaxileyJun 23, 2018

@ Imara. You are correct The catholic Church,or rather Papal Nicholas held that view; that africans have no soul.Pretty much animals, and thus justified slavery.Iam not sure if the Church recanted this view officially,or just PRAYS nobody like IMARA brings it up.Obviously its embarrassing to the church. And if the Negro has not soul, it goes without saying that"whoever layeth with the Negro has committed an abomination, and the off springs shall be cursed for eternity..." Max chapter 2 verse 3.
I dont understand how wafrica gobble these foreign religions without questions,or researching first.Any modicum of insult to my race, would kick me out of there so fast..

  18. LucyJun 23, 2018

This is very hypocritical am dissapointed, he was was simply using his rapping talent to reach out to the generation addicted to drugs

  19. KenyaJun 23, 2018

I see nothing wrong with his rap music. In fact he should be encouraged. No wonder mainstream Churches & Catholic are declining while Charismatic churches are growing.

  20. Ken motleyJun 23, 2018

As a catholic I see nothing wrong with this. Youth can relate, he isn’t cussing!!!!!

  21. Karing'aJun 23, 2018

Have these colonial religions/churches discovered another God?Why do they behave as if as they brought God to Kenya? The other day another colonial, evil church,PCEA banned the traditional MBURI CIA KIAMA,(a ceremonial passage rite of centuries among the Gikuyu married men) to it's members. It is as if God has just arrived in Kenya.

  22. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

"It is as if God has just arrived in Kenya." This May not be Funny as such but Karing'a I am Lol!!!

  23. UkweliJun 23, 2018

If Amazon never transitioned from selling books they would not be where they are today .change is coming to Catholic.

  24. MaxileyJun 24, 2018

@Kweli, I agree with you. Even the most conservative Arabs from Saudi, as from today they are allowing women to drive cars.Till now, they were the only people in the world who did not allow women to drive. But will oil revenues dwindling, and dependency on oil for future uncertain, they are trying to accommodate, and also live with the rest of the world.
Sometimes you have to make realistic adjustments, and avoid being left behind.

  25. Tobby Okong'ohJun 23, 2018

I am a Catholic but I see further division of the church. When pope Francis recently said the SDAs observe the true Sabbath why didn't they act by excommunicating the Pipe?

  26. ImaraJun 24, 2018

Mheshimiwa Maxiley, you are one of a kind. I always like to read your comments.

Could you please shed some light on "Max Chapter 2 verse 3?" Are you the author of this book? How can I get it?

  27. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

Mark Chapter 2 verse 3: "And many were gathered together, so that there was no more room, not even at the door. And he was preaching the word to them." Case in Point: The Suspended priest was Preaching the Word of God. Masaa awache Upuuzi.

  28. maxileyJun 24, 2018

@ Imara, I was just being humorous...But I have been told my many friends to write abook.Thinking about it. I will let you know if I write one.In fact in high school, Istarted but did not finish. Might just pick up where I left.

  29. SophieJun 24, 2018

Fr. Masaa,You do not have to be tied to any religion to spread the Gospel of Christ.
Get out of the catholic church.

  30. One day at a tymeJun 24, 2018

Take note that when Catholic priests sexually abuse children no action is taken untill there is public outcry. This priest is doing the right thing and action against him is fast and furious.

  31. GUEST1Jun 24, 2018

Good point. And it's kind of BLIND Sheep suspending SIGHT Sheep.

  33. Mwalimu SangJun 24, 2018

I knew this will happen, I am totally against his suspension. He is real, he does it from his heart. He is a 21st Century Priest

  34. Romeo23Jun 24, 2018

Simple I see you have folowers start your own church..only God can Judge your inner soul.

  35. formerlyguest2Jun 24, 2018

    Totally!

  36. ImaraJun 24, 2018

Times have changed. You cannot base your life on a book (bible) written about the Jewish lifestyle over 2,000 years ago. This book is out of date. Why? It still talks about women being inferior to men. Women are asked to remain silent in places of worship and are expected to "obey" their husbands while their husbands are asked to simply "love" their wives.

Women are still being blamed for a mythical story written in the bible about Eve being tricked by the snake to eat the apple and then giving it to her husband Adam to eat it. When I challenged my Jewish friend about this story, he told me that, it did not happen! It is just simple Jewish mythologies about their past. Another myth is of a person identified as Jonah who was swallowed by a shark and delivered to a place known as "Ninevah" to tell the residents of that place about god!

If my ancestors had written their religious book and were strong and powerful enough with weapons of mass destruction, my native language, religion, and culture would have been forced upon the weak and desperate people of the world the same way the koran and the bible were imposed upon us.

It is time that we trash these two colonial books and deal with our current issues about how to end corruption and stop the chances of Mheshimiwa Ruto or Mheshimiwa Gideon Moi from becoming the next leaders of Kenya come 2022. That is more important than wasting our valuable time looking for solutions for our very complex social issues from the Jewish bible and Arabic koranic mentally oppressive books.

  37. leenJun 24, 2018

Catholic clergy move with time. Even those code of conducts and doctrines can be changed to match with the prevailing needs. Don't you have concern for the youths? So you don't care even if they get lost into drugs and other secular things? I'm totally opposed to the suspension of this Priest. How else can youths be returned back and attracted to the church? Father your job is good and according to Nehemiah 5:19 God will reward you. I'm a Catholic but very disappointed by this action. What has hurt them? Have they felt challenged? Has this priest become a threat to them? What would be better, rapping in church for the sake of youths or being found in women's houses, lodging and clubs enjoying sex like most of the Catholic priests do nowadays. Catholic priests stop being hypocrites or else we start exposing you one by one. We can start a busting mission because many of you have impregnated women and dumbed them, but when a real Apostle comes out not wearing a white robe but a pair of shorts and a T-shirt to bring our youths back to church you send him away. What are you spreading? Hatred or the love of God. It seems you hate youths very much and your joy is when they get lost into drugs. Change with time.

  38. MikesamJun 24, 2018

Hypocritical leadership. Jesus had stylistic devices of teaching the people.

  39. kanjaJun 25, 2018

Rapping ain't bad but his clads ain't appealing..I can't imagine a Priest preaching to me in the Holy Mass while covering his head like 2pac shakur besides what example is he showing to the young Priests in Formation..what if they all follow his strategy to win more youth followers. He should just get suspended for ever

  40. ChristineJun 25, 2018

I am against that.Father wasnt supposed to be suspended.Let him reach the youth.I am a staunch catholic.I am against his suspension.NKTIEST

  41. kimJun 25, 2018

the father is right, church is just boring to youths, they need someone to make them feel accommodated , he did the right thing to pass the message about Christ. the only mistake was the bandana on his head

  42. jimmyJun 26, 2018

That is the right move!!! Suspend is not enough.... Fire! I think he chose the wrong Career!
