Police in Amsterdam, the Netherlands have launched an investigation after a stowaway was found alive in the nose wheel of a cargo plane that landed at Schiphol Airport on Sunday.
The flight operated by Cargolux Italia had flown from Johannesburg, South Africa on Sunday, and made only one stop at Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi, Kenya. The flight takes about 11 hours.
It is rare for stowaways to survive long flights due to low oxygen levels at high altitudes and the cold.
“The man was found alive in the nose wheel section of the plane and was taken to hospital in a stable condition. It is quite remarkable that the man is still alive,” Royal Dutch Military Police spokeswoman Joanna Helmonds told AFP.
“Our first concern of course was for his health. This is definitely very unusual that someone was able to survive the cold at such a height – very, very unusual.”
Authorities are trying to establish the origin and identity of the man, and it is not known if he boarded the plane in South Africa or Nairobi. Officials said he is believed to be between 16 and 35 years old.
Once the stowaway is discharged from the hospital, the Asylum Seekers Centre will process and determine his status as a potential asylum seeker.
In June 2019, a stowaway was found dead in a Clapham garden in London after dropping off a Kenya Airways flight from Nairobi to Heathrow Airport.
In February 2021, a 16-year-old Kenyan stowaway miraculously survived a 14-hour flight from Nairobi to the Netherlands via Turkey and the UK. The teenager was found in the wheel arch of a Turkish Airlines cargo plane that landed in the Netherlands from the UK and was rushed to the hospital with severe hypothermia.

Very luck for him to have survived such a risky"escapade". My question is, how did he breach security measures at the airport. In this era of terror threats, this is not just acceptable...Was this due to human error, lax security, corruption? Yes the authorities should get to the bottom of this security breach and hopefully seal the "loopholes".
I am less concerned about the security breach, since he had no intent of harming anyone else but unfortunately, himself. How do you risk your life to this extent, is my question???
So if one of those Alshabab thugs breached security that would be of a lesser concern to you? If a storeaway can do it,you don think security is lax?
Read my statement again young man or woman. It looks like your reading comprehension skills are lacking at best. Al Shabaab's intents are to harm people. And I think as many as possible. But this guy's breaching of security was just to escape to another country, NOT to harm other people like those thugs do. F**k No! Security breach is a BAAAAAD ass!
These are cases of desperation and knowing that if only you crossed to the other side of the world, things might be better.
Let's focus on some of the reasons,
One, CORRUPTION is so rampant in AFRICA in general. It has turned to where by the cooks are eating the whole pot leaving crumbs for the MASSES.
Two, insecurity plays a role because the minute you report CORRUPTION, then you become the target.
Three, AFRICAN leaders are known to use hired thugs to silent anyone who doesn't sing their tune.
But, the main issue is we can change presidents all we want, but the folks running the show are the same.
Look at what happened to Alpha Konde, from opposition to even being worse than the former. We have to UNDERSTAND that DEALS are cut with incoming presidents, that's what happened in Zimbabwe. The same happened in KENYA, knowing what MOI and GOONS did and yet no one has had a day in court.
So, when folks take drastic measures to escape, there's more than meet the eye.
Yes hind site is always 20/20. @ Mteja, just because he had no intent to harm, does not negate the fact that security was breached.Lucky for passengers and staff that the guy was not a terrorist with evil intent. You can never know the intent before hand...
