Nineteen people were killed and several others injured along the Nairobi-Nakuru highway after a bus collided with a trailer.
Nakuru police commander Hassan Barua said the driver of the bus was overtaking a small vehicle when it collided head-on with the trailer, traveling in the opposite direction. A second trailer that was following the bus rammed it from the back, causing more damage and more casualties.
Rift Valley Traffic Enforcement Officer Zero Arome said the accident happened around 3am on Saturday, adding that cleanup started immediately after the accident which left bodies strewn on the road and others trapped inside the mangled bus that had its right side completely ripped off.
The 52-seater bus reportedly belongs to Superhighway Sacco and normally plies the Githurai 45 route. It left Nairobi around 11pm and was headed to Busia.
The driver of the bus is said to have survived the accident but fled the scene.
The injured are being treated at St Mary's Hospital in Nakuru.

53 years after independence and the Nakuru - Nairobi way is not yet " a dual carriage highway! " This is called inefficiency.
The people of Kenya are sound asleep. That's why they keep on re-electing greedy, corrupt, inefficient , and morally bankrupt people to run the basic affairs of our country. What then do you expect?
There is Chirchir Arap Ruto who stole Muteshi's land, impregnated a 16 year old girl (while married and professing to be a christian), refuses to pay child support, and yet he is running for the second highest office in the land! The man should be in jail! Guess what! he is even dreaming of running for the highest office in the land and yet, he has refused to tell us what he knows about the events that took place in Eldoret after the failed election of 2007. If he were in a truly "democratic" country, he (Ruto) would have been in jail for life!
The traffic policemen are nothing but a gang of thieves enriching themselves by extorting funds from motorists. There is absolutely no excuse why we have these corrupt policemen on our highways. Technology is so advanced that these thieves would end their illegal activities in just one day.
We have seen what Jubilee alliance has done so far. Re-electing them again shows how politically illiterate the people of Kenya are!
Can you imagine Anne Waiguru running for office in a truly democratic country after the financial scandal at the N.Y.S? Where is the Kenyan judiciary? Have they been compromised like our corrupt traffic police men and women?
One thing I agree with you @ msemakweli is that the Nakuru-Nairobi highway should have been a dual-carriage way yester-decades. I wondered why Nrb-Thika took priority yet Nku-Nbi is an International highway........
Who is to blame for this ? Jumbirii or rasa
The driver of the bus is to be blamed. He was overtaking. rasa or jumbirii as have nothing to do with this
All of them are to blame. They have been in government all these years. You know What? They do not care about roads. They travel in the air, they use helicopters. Ruffle the air and they will chop off your neck. What is one more death on our roads? To them it's nothing. Until that time ordinary Kenyans rise and demand their rights, nothing will happen. How long will Kenyans remain at the mercy of their exploitive leaders? Remember, people without asses do not need a bathroom. Our leaders don't have one, but you do.
'According to survivors who spoke to Sunday Nation, the driver had been driving dangerously and appeared unfamiliar with the road'. You cannot blame the govt' for driver's mistake even in USA careless drivers kill.
The dark force has a very strong hold of Africa. While our people die every day due to road carnage dictators in Africa transfer secretly billions of dollars to Swiss banks. This money never come back to Africa because most of these dictators die leaving that money in Swiss bank faults with nobody to claim it. It is like a curse for us marginalized Africans and the sad thing is that those that marginalize us are the very the loudest politicians that talk about White oppression. We pay taxes, infact Kenyan pays the highest tax in the World, yet our roads are death traps. After more than Fifty years of independence no Kenyan is guaranteed of getting home safely due to poor road conditions. Corrupt Kenyan politicians continue to reap off Kenyans billions of US dollars yearly with impunity. No single politician or Police officer have ever gone to jail in Kenya over corruption. God have mercy on us
Condolences to the families who are dealing with such an horrific nightmare.
My fellow Kenyans, when are you going to wake up from your slumber and fight for your rights. How can a 1 way be a highway. That road should be no more than 40 kilometers per hour. It isn't safe for any vehicle to travel on a 1 way at the rates those vehicles drive on it.
That government need to expand those roads, implement the laws and also put road signs to help motorists.
With the issue of the driver running, are you serious. The officials need to visit the bus owner charge them for reckless driving and endangerment if they fail to provide them with the driver. Also this bus owners or saccos asthey call them, need to take responsibilities of this accidents.
I honestly blame Kenyans for letting this keep happening to them. You all need to come to an understanding that your votes count. You have a right per the Kenyan constitution to mandate your representatives for an official townhall meeting and demand things to be done your way. I'm sick and tired seeing and reading over and over news that don't need to be.
Believe you me, Kenya will never change or improve unless The people realize it's them to change it. Don't expect this so called leaders that were voted in based on biases to help you. Take advantage of the counties, hold accountable those officials. Fire them if needed and hire. Make them work for you not the other way around. Those are civil servants. Per the constitution they are your slaves and your are their masters.
And he will probably not be charged. Law and order have completely broken down in Kenya, If the institution that is supposed to enforce the law is the most corrupt institution in the country what do you expect?
