Kenyan Taxpayers to Pay Sh2.9 Billion as Send Off to Governors Voted Out in Tuesday’s Elections

As voters sent 25 governors packing in Tuesday’s election, the move is set to come with a Sh2.8 billion burden on taxpayers in form of sendoff packages.

The law provides that an exiting governor is entitled to a gratuity of 31 per cent of their annual basic pay for every year served. Deputy governors, county executive committee members, chief officers, county secretaries, and county assembly speakers are also entitled to such retirement sendoffs.

The incoming 47 county assemblies will elect new speakers, meaning more exiting officials will be claiming compensation.

Kamotho Waiganjo, a member of the now-defunct Commission for the Implementation of the Constitution (CIC), decried the provision, saying there is need to review the law on the gratuity.

“This is a conversation that needs to happen. From a budget perspective, this is not sustainable. We need to think about it. The cost is even bigger at the national government level,” Waiganjo said in an interview.

“We need to find a way to make it self-contributory, otherwise we’ll get into a deep hole given the high wage bill we already have.”

Why penalize citizens by compensating people they have voted out for non-service? There should be a budget only to compensate workers whi offer services.

Why the complaints? Can you all shut uo? What did you expect? Hii ni kionjo - the corruption, incompetence and general inefficiency that is coming will be mind-boggling, to put it mildly. Dumb Kenyans, like Americans in 2016, have decided to put tribe before issues and have voted in these vices. I won't shed a tear as Wanjiku continues to go to bed hungry, lack access to medical services (coz funds were stolen) or remain jobless coz economy is no good. Mtoto akililia wembe, mpatie tafazali!

Once Kikuyus and Luos realize they both equal under one law and one God, then Kenya will take off. The suspicion and mistrust between the two will continue to hold Kenya hostage.

This has nothing to do with tribe. It's these greedy politicians bwana!! And they expect us not to bribe the police when we get pulled over, bribe head teachers and principals for our mediocre kids to get into top schools etc.
Im telling you these politicians and preachers/bible thumpers are going to finish us. Atleast a whore takes your money and makes you bust all kinds of nuts for some change! Govt and kanisa is straight up highway robbery.

No Kenyan should lose their life as a result of an election.Regardless of the tribe that they come from.We should all focus on improving the quality of peace politics in the country as well as Developing our beautiful country. This is the ideal that we all need to work towards regardless of whether we are in NASA or Jubilee. My prayer is that God may help us to fully understand this.

Why does a governor who has lost need a golden handshake when some of them started stealing from day one. They lost as they did not bring development.Arrogant UK is back and so is Arap Kipindupindu what were nurses thinking bringing back this two assuming the elections results were not manipulated.Despite strikes unga, creation of fake tribes,no show at crucial debates , cholera and rising unemployment over 8million Kenyans decided against change who are we to complain when we are then taken for granted.Corruption and theft for another 5 years.
