Kenyan butchers are reportedly now using harmful chemicals as a preservative, putting thousands of meat consumers at risk of diseases and even death.
The Standard reports that butchers are using sodium metabisulfite, a toxic compound, to preserve meat and make it appear fresher in the eyes of buyers.
The chemical is allegedly first diluted with water and smeared on the meat, which makes it appear more red and fresh even if it overstayed in the butchery for several days.
The paper reports that the chemical is found white powder form and has been branded as ‘dawa ya nyama’ among the butchery operators.
Sodium metabisulfite is widely used as a bleaching agent in manufacturing industries and is locally sold at Sh650 for 500 grams. It is readily available in local agrovets and chemists.
Medics say the chemical is cancerous and also causes allergic reactions, respiratory reactions in asthmatics and anaphylaxis.
“This is adulteration. The use of chemicals is illegal and the meat is not up to standard,” Dr. Kepha Ombacho, Director of Public Health told the Standard.
This revelation comes at a time when some contraband goods recently seized by government authorities including sugar, cooking oil, ketchup and other products were found to be unfit for consumption.

My only query is did the guy in the picture apply bleach or whatever chemical on his meat? He looks familiar and the butchery is familiar too. I doubt I could have escaped this one? Ngai wa Kirinyaga help us.
Seems like we no longer have journalists in Kenya. Did the reporter observe any incidence of a butcher treating the meat? A report who cannot investigate a butchery event cannot be an investigative journalist.
You can go and finish the job. Or did you cotribute any piece to his story? He did his best.
If true, something is badly wrong in our country. Are we Willing to kill just to get a few more shillings? What is the work of KBS other than harassing and arresting small business women who are just doing something to raise up their children and charging then bribes amounting to tens of thousands. Ruiru town is notorious for this. Stall owners are arrested right and left and put in cells and the police demand between 20-30k in order to let these traders free for very small offenses. The KBS should be going for those who poison meat, sugar, cooking oil etc. Corruption should be nabbed from the these corrupt institutions. KBS goes after small fry while protecting the sharks.
WTF me and buying 🍖 divorce straight, where the fuck is my Lawyer, divorce papers please
"Allegedly" no evidence. Fake news allegedly so Kenyans, can loose trust in their butchers and import meat with more mercury in it and destroy the health of Kenyans. God help Kenya !!
Media corruption is now worse than police corruption. All you need is a few million shillings and the editors will not question the report. They will just put it on headlines for as long as you are willing to pay.
Kuufanya mji wa Nairobi na miji yote katika nchi ya Kenya kuwa safi ni bora kuliko kuing'arisha nyama ili ipendeze macho na huku imewekwa kemikali zinazoweza kuwadhuru raia wasio na habari.
