Murder Suspect Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu Allegedly Moved to Kamiti Maximum Prison

Prime suspect in business lady Monica Kimani's murder Joseph 'Jowie' Irungu has reportedly been moved to Kamiti Maximum Prison.

His lawyers claim that Irungu was transferred from Industrial Area Remand Prison to Kamiti under unclear circumstances and that he is being tortured.

“My client has not been given the specialised treatment at KNH (Kenyatta National Hospital)…we are also told that he was transferred to Kamiti and there are issues that have been raised by Jowi in regards to torture,” the lawyer claim.

The defense team has further told the court that Irungu is being mistreated and his self-inflicted gunshot wound on the left side of the chest has not been treated. They say he is only surviving on painkillers.

“He was denied admission at KNH…Despite the family paying Sh20,000 for his admission as advised by one doctor the hospital denied him admission,” they add.

High Court Justice James Wakiaga on Tuesday directed that the suspect be taken to KNH immediately for an operation.

Prosecutor Catherine Mwaniki has promised to investigate claims that the suspect is being tortured and to give a report of the findings to the  court.

Irungu has also withdrawn an application seeking to have Justice Wakiaga recuse himself from the case after the judge earlier described him as a ‘woman eater’.
