Uganda Gov't to Introduce Chinese Language as a Mandatory Subject in All Schools

The Ugandan government is set to introduce the Chinese language as a mandatory subject in all schools countrywide beginning January 2019.

Minister in the Office of the President Esther Mbayo says the government has prepared teaching materials for the subject and has selected 35 schools for the initial rollout of the program.

“We have received materials such as textbooks and illustrations. We have also received some tutors from the Chinese government,” Ms. Mbayo says.

Uganda's government says the decision to introduce Chinese classes is informed by the growing relationship between China and the East African nation.

The East African reports that 11 of the schools selected for initial rollout are in country's capital, Kampala, 8 in in the Western region while, Eastern, Northern, and the West Nile region will have 7, 5 and 4 respectively.

Director of Uganda National Curriculum Development Centre (NCDC) Grace Baguma says the subject will be compulsory to senior one and senior two students.

“We hope the schools will comply. We hope to increase the number of schools with time,” Ms. Baguma says.

Baguma further says the language will be introduced as an undergraduate degree program dubbed Chinese language and culture at Makerere University.

Try asking China to introduce 'Kiganda' (whatever it's called) as a compulsory subject in their schools... As much as I know that learning a language is good for the learner, I feel like we, africans, do it for the wrong reasons..... some of us abandoning their mother-tongues totally and teaching their kids only English... a self-hate than any other I know.
Deja vu!

Dada Amina Mohamed, Ndugu Uhuru Muigai Kenyatta:

Way to go Museveni...although you're a dictator...I support this idea and hope your neighbors will follow suit sooner.

This way we can have 2 super powers begging for business space in Africa and will be without a catch in their loans and what-at-view.

English is pretty much a universal language for business communication and otherwise.Iam pretty sure thats the language mm7 is using with chinese.
So is mm7 going to import chinese teachers,or just rely on material?
What mm7 has done is a classic example of why dictatorship is dangerous.
I applaud south africa for introducing kiswahili in their curriculum.

How do you understand an adversary if you don't understand their language. Apart from making it compulsory, I see plenty of upside when negotiating in the future. English and Mandarin.

Kampala has been ignored for a while compared to its immediate neighbors. Kigali, Nairobi and Dar are the favorites in that region, even Juba sometimes comes up higher on the pile. On a devil's advocate note, Greek and Latin were at different ages, universal language as English is today. We have French speaking countries in Africa? how did that come about? So M7 dancing to a new tune is not after all far fetched. UG is on uncharted waters on this one and only time can tell-maybe Chinese or Swahili will be universal language one day. Next time someone needs to remember that Kampala is not the oversleeping uncle.

Miaka mingi mingi iliyopita, nilichukua somo la siasa (political science) darasani. Nakumbuka mwalimu aliyefundisha somo hili, alituambia jambo ambalo sijalisahau mpaka sasa. Alisema, " Justice exists only among equals."

Huu ndio mfano pekee duniani ambao mtawala (Mturuki) alilazimika kujifunza lugha ya Mtawaliwa, yaani Mwarabu.
