The government has approved a proposal to have Kenyan private security guards issued with licenses to carry firearms.
The Private Security Regulatory Authority says the guards will be allowed to carry guns in six months' time after undergoing fresh training and vetting.
The authority's CEO Fazul Mahamud says the Ministry of Interior and other national security organs have approved the proposal.
"Those to be armed are in government and public installations and those in cash in transit. We are preparing for a thorough vetting of employers and guards to ensure its success," Fazul says.
Mohamed says employers must first ensure that their staffs get a mandatory insurance cover before they are given firearms.
"Security guards, especially in malls, form the first line of defense against terrorists and other criminal elements. If we trust them with such establishment why not trust them with firearms?"
"We have been complementing the national government on security matters and we are happy that we have recognized for that contribution. We request that the process of setting up an academy for training purposes be expedited," says Mohamed.
The move to arm private guards comes in the wake of the DusitD2 complex terrorist attack in Nairobi's Westlands area, where 21 people were killed and several others left with injuries.

Giving them guns while paying them poorly is a recipe for increased gun crime.
Very correct; a Recipe for Crime.
Good move but if they are caught beating on their spouses or any violent behavior outside of work which is a recipe for disaster they should be fired...well because they would have to lose their gun and without a gun can't do their job.
So now if a gangster wants a gun all they need to do is become a watchman?
When a country is lead by a boy then this kind of bottom of the barrel nonsensical idea can be expected.
Pombe kila saa.
😂A good way to Put it.😂
The security guards who don't know how to use those metal detector wands will now have guns. Brilliant.
Before kupatia hawa guns lazima natrain wao properly. Hapana patia every kichwa maji bunduki. Taenda kishoot watu ovyo ovyo. Pia wengi nakunywa changaa sana. Baada ya muda kidogo hii bunduki yao yao yote tachukuliwa na wakora na kenya takuwa gangland.
Long ovedue! This will be a life saving measure. If the guards had guns during this week's terrorism act, they would have engaged with the the terrorists and at least the sound of fire guns would have alerted the people within, hence, take cover quickly.
