Former Kenyan President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi is Dead

Former Kenyan President Daniel Toroitich arap Moi is dead. This was announced in a presidential proclamation by President Uhuru Kenyatta.

Moi, who has been battling ill health for the last several years, was pronounced dead at Nairobi Hospital early Tuesday morning. He was 95 years old. He is survived by eight children and several grandchildren.

Moi was born in Kabarack village, Sacho division, Baringo County.

The late Moi ruled Kenya for 24 years from 1978 to his retirement in 2002. He previously served as the country’s third Vice President, a position he served for 11 years from January 5, 1967 to August 22, 1978 when he rose to the presidency to succeed then-president Joao Kenyatta who died in office.

Moi also served in Parliament for 37 years as the Member of Parliament for Baringo North from 1963 to 1967, then as MP for Baringo Central from 1967 to his retirement from politics in 2002.

The late Moi also served as Minister for Home Affairs from 1964 to 1978 as well as Chairman of the Organization of African Unity (OAU) from June, 1981 to June, 1983.

I would like to echo that sentiment. I won't but I'd like to. Extra judicial killings, rigged courts, torture chambers, rigged elections, corruption on a grand scale, the wholesale looting of the Kenyan treasury, the systematic and systemic suppression of Kenyans rights and aspirations, the destruction of Kenya's environment, the strangulation of the Kenyan economy for 24 long years through incompetence and corruption. This is what this dictator did to Kenya and should be included in his epitaph. I know we are supposed to say nice things about the dead but the man put on this falsely pious front as he did horrible things to his country and it's people. The end was too long coming.

I don't think many ermans mourned the death of Hitler. Moi will be remembered for ethinic cleansing, tribalisation of the country, mega corruption, fraud, torture. the list is endless and the country is yet to recover from the ills.
