Moi to be Buried with Head Facing Sunrise in Accordance with Kalenjin Traditions

The late former President Daniel Arap Moi will be buried with his head facing sunrise in accordance with Kalenjin traditions, according to reports.

Kalenjin customs require that the deceased is buried at night with the head facing east, the direction of sunrise. Kalenjin elders have said Moi will not be interred in the nightfall due to his Christianity beliefs but that his burial will take place in the afternoon, The Star reports.

During his burial on Wednesday, February 12th, elders will perform a few cultural norms owing to Moi’s status in the Kalenjin community, the publication added.

“That means Moi should be buried in the afternoon before sunset. He can’t be buried during the sunrise or the sunset. However, he will be buried in the afternoon,” Kalenjin Council Chairman John Seii told the Star.

Tugen elders have selected the gravesite, which must be on the right side of the front part of Moi’s Kabarak home.

Moi, who passed away while receiving treatment at  Nairobi Hospital on Tuesday, is expected to be buried with his “rungu” - a baton popularly referred to as “Fimbo ya Nyayo, which signified power. He will also be buried with a suit and a watch.

President Kenyatta announced that the second Kenyan president who ruled the country for 24 years before retiring in 2002 will be accorded appropriate civilian and full military honors during his burial. He will be laid to rest at his home in Kabarak, Nakuru County.

Moi will get a 19-gun salute and not 21 as his predecessor Mzee Jomo Kenyatta. The 21-gun salute is given to a head of state who were Commander-in-Chief at the time of his or her death.

He should have donated his head to research for cross examination. Human race still needs to understand how a so called christian can be so cruel as to detain another human being in total darkness for years, kill, maim and thief all day long and still sleep soundly at night.

It's called Addiction. Addiction to Evil, Corruption; even Murder with Impunity. A good Example is the Killing of Robert Ouko in the Wake of him (Moi) telling his Extra-judicials to "Teach him (Ouko) a Lesson". And I even can't even Believe that "A school girl committed Suicide after being Sexually assaulted (at Statehouse Nakuru) ALLEGEDLLY by 'the President'".

RIP, Mzee Moi. May the same people who insult you realize that the same God who created you, also created them... or did they create themselves?? As far as I know, judgement, according to the Good Book, belongs to the Lord. Not to GUEST1, or Mkenya Halisi. We, as Kenyans, will give Moi the respect that he deserves. And I am sure if there are 'noisemakers', like with Miguna, a holding 'toilet' will be waiting nearby...

You are the only one talking sense . I will not insult Mzee, even though I loath some of the bad stuff that happened during his tenure as President. Yet Raila , Uhuru, Ruto etc have killed , maimed , looted, sold our country to the richest foreigners etc

I wouldn’t insult Moi but I perfectly understand the wrath of those doing so & may God forgive them. They are bitter with a reason. Whereas Moi was a good man to some, he was especially brutal to others simply because they dared question some of his actions or those of his cronies. Try as I might, I am finding it especially hard to forgive him for what happened to Kenneth Matiba, the best president Kenya never had (alongside Tom Mboya), Bishop Alexander Muge, Robert Ouko & many others who needlessly lost their lives when they disagreed with him. I firmly believe this is why our country is ridden with too many problems & challenges which are now slowly starting to kill us. I left Kenya just after Moi gave up power & he was a major reason I & many others left. Today, Kenyans are still suffering & dying from economic injustices which can be directly traced from his time in office (our girls in Saudi Arabia & elsewhere in the Middle East...)
I’ll let the man go in peace because I believe in Almighty God but forgiveness is for another day
