Dusk-to-Dawn Curfew: Uproar as Police are Filmed Brutalizing Kenyans [VIDEO]

Police are on the spot over brutality and excessive force unleashed on Kenyans on day one of the dusk-to-dawn curfew declared by President Uhuru on Wednesday.

The 10-hour daily restriction running between 7 pm and 5 am took effect on Friday and is part of the government’s measures to combat the spread of coronavirus.

While a majority of Kenyans went home early to beat the 7 pm cutoff, many others found themselves in trouble with police after they were found outside beyond 7 pm.

Photos and videos of police clobbering members of the public who failed to arrive home before 7 pm have emerged, sparking uproar among Kenyans on social media.

D.j. Vowxs Kenya said: “I am seriously pissed off!!!! This is very wrong in all ways!!!!! Police brutality is a violation of human rights!!!! Mtu mwenye anafaa kukuchunga ndiye anakupiga!!! And we are supposed to trust these people!!”

Philipina Mwaisaka wrote: “This is very inhuman. They should just arrest and charge them. Why are they so brutal to harmless people? Shame!”

Peter Ngunzu's noted: “The police should be informed that Kenya is not under coup, war or any violence...we are all fighting a deadly diseases, the order was arrest charge…not beat...no wonder the qualifications.”

George Mwany said: “This all what D minus waste materials can do to fellow citizens, so the curfew was not to prevent spread of Corona but to harass Kenyans, they have revealed the biggest level of illiteracy, I wonder how Kenyans tax r used to train such heartless beasts.”

Anthony Okumu stated: “Kenya police should be reserved for elites not these demagogues with nothing in their brain account. They have no ability to reason. The work of the police is to keep law and order.”

Patrick Kabugi said: “This is barbaric. As much as I support the curfew whipping up people is unacceptable. The President should also force employers to close their businesses at 4.30 pm, so that people can get time to commute to their respective homes. Imagine being released from work at 7 and finding all matatus home. Surely how Will you be home by the time the curfew starts?”

Mc Opolo Opere noted: “As much as we are supposed to follow the law the police should stop taking advantage of the situation but thinking simply because they have the guns and Barton's they can beat up everybody we are human beings and the police should not dare push Kenyans by saying serikali ni yao we are a peaceful people so the police should not dare provoke us

Steven Kim said: “Kenya!! Kenya!! Kenya!! A country where police officers do what they think is right rather than doing what is constitutionally right, this is unacceptable, barbaric, insane, crazy, unethical, and to say the least disturbing!! For safety keep away from police, keep away from Corona!”

Thank you @Guest1! This whole thing does not make sense and especially the fact that it is being enforced by those who are clueless as far as transportation for common mwananchi is concerned (born and raised with silver spoons in their mouths) and being implemented by empty heads who do not understand social distancing. Washindwe na wapate korona.

It is the medicine of tough love due to indiscipline which is widely spread among the general Kenyan community. Follow the issued orders and you will not be clobbered. Such orders are being issued by other nations across the globe; so it is just strange that it is only Kenyans who have difficulties abiding by the set rule. Black folks seems to issues with the law nearly every where in the world. It is equally embarrassingly shameful when a grown person can’t understand what to do with the issued orders @mucene included! Ought to be ashamed of yourself!

And whose choice is it when you bear millions of kids that you can’t afford to feed? You think the cops like being there patrolling the streets. The problem with you Kenyans is that you like apportioning the blame to the next guy while you are not being responsible enough. Just read again what you wrote @philly! Whose fault is it? Is it your fault? Don’t tell me the government! Government - of the people, by the people, and for the people!!!

The kenyan government is monkey see monkey do government. There is no logic in imposing a night time curfew. Experts have said spreading people out physically is how the virus is fought not by crowding every kenya activity into twelve day light hours.

Njembura mwororo (not verified)     Fri, 03/27/2020 @ 05:43pm

How can this be possible in an independent nation. Uhuru must be held personally responsible for the heinous crime of these human debris they call police or army or whatever the crap they fuckin are. Our grand parents went through this very abuse and torture under the colonial tranny. How can we accept the same in our present Kenya? All those government thugs in uniform should be charged with aggravated criminal assault and terrorism against good people of Kenya and prosecuted to the fullest extent of the law.

This is a time of war not with just Covid-19, but with those against the people and therefore against God. (What they are trying to stop, cannot be stopped-God's judgment). God's wrath is on this earth!!

Just as our people could not stop colonialism, slavery, corruption and lies, those in power cannot stop what is about to take place.
We seem to be re-activating imperialism and colonialism where our forefathers had to explain where they were going and what time. A "Corona" virus cannot result to the powers that be, shamelessly beating our mothers, brothers and sisters.
In the name of Covid-19, we will steal, beat, maimed and kill our own citizens.
It's not about protecting Kenyan citizens because this time more of us will die from police brutality than from Corona virus.
God protect Kenyan and Kenyans!!!

You will go to war all alone. We want peace and nothing but peace. That's one tired line straight from Hussler's play book. Eti God this God that. Who told you that God can be owned the way own a parcel of land?

Our God is a very gracious Heavenly Father! He does not bring scorn and calamity to His people. He is a God of love, kindness, blessings, healing and everything else that is good!

Ask Satan why he attempts to torment those who love God!

No worries .

The Kenyan police will be dying of corona very soon.

Corona is the cure for ignorance and arrogance.

What is seriously wrong with my country? This is not the time for brutal force. You don't fight a health crisis with teargas and rungus. Bastards, all of them. And to you my fellow citizens, follow the medical advise given. Social distancing!! (kinda defeats the purpose the way the wananchi are all laid on the ground together like sardines)

I agree,Kenyans are very indisciplined lot, they were given leeway on what to expect but they had to go out kujionea . Wacha wapigwe washike adabu, that is theonly language a certain segment of Kenyans understand!

These Jangiri in uniform need to be charge for beating innocent people. This is shameful. Who told Corona virus stopped by beating people.

Thankful (not verified)     Fri, 03/27/2020 @ 08:30pm

We don't know how to communicate effectively using words. As a culture, we force communication by violence and threats. We beat our children to behave or read harder and they become later these officers, spouse beaters and corrupt individuals. Results by all means. Country in need of serious therapy.

The wrath of God (Corona virus) is penetrating to the mighty & strong. It will get to them soon or later. This time they will not fly abroad for treatment.

Sukuma (not verified)     Fri, 03/27/2020 @ 10:00pm

Honestly speaking, this is the language Kenyans understand. If it will take brutality to stop the spread of Coronavirus, so be it. Curfew is curfew and the citizens need to plan their daily activities better and be at their residences by 7:30 pm.

The only comment on this thread worth reading. The health CS has been pleading for social distancing for days...This is the only language Africans understand. Rwanda, Singapore, Malaysia had to go the enforcement way to maintain sanity.

Yes...dawa ya moto ni moto. ..don't forget they were even throwing stones to the cops. If anyone has seen Italy videos.......wacha watu wakae masaa... Our poor police force is EXPOSED to this virus due to wananchi's disobedience....

Please POLICEMEN!!!, Everyone is scared to death by stupid Coronavirus and it seems you POLICEMEN you are worst than the virus or any other creature on the world. How are you preventing the spread when you are beating and putting this guys together. You really need trainings and you are putting a bad pictures of yourselves.
This guys are human being like you guys.

mwengi Danga (not verified)     Fri, 03/27/2020 @ 10:45pm

In the first palace, there was no need for the curfew because Covid-19 does not distinguish between day and night. All the government needs to do is to ensure all night clubs and other hangout joints are closed day/night until they control Covid-19. The problem here is that people have to go out to look for something to feed their families. If the provider returns home, empty the whole family will not have anything to eat. While it is imperative to contain this virus, Kenyan govern must evaluate their approach carefully and with great caution. Not easy to lead a starving population.

Balanced comment. We live in the real world, and am in sorrow when I see fellow Kenyans on this forum gleefully happy to see helpless Kenyans brutalized. The curfew is not the right instrument at this time (there is no insurrection). closing non essential businesses by 4:30pm will be more effective. allowing public transportation to continue operations until 9pm will allow for clearing up of rush hour traffic. It is the DISTANCING that works, not the curfew or billy clubs.

Kamande (not verified)     Fri, 03/27/2020 @ 11:21pm

This is shameful. We have exposed ourselves as savages for the whole world to see, thanks to the social media. No wonder, one of the Chinese thugs referred to us as monkeys. Monkey-soldiers can even behave better. When there is no chance of the police to be bribed, they turn out to be savages. Where are our lawyers?

Njao @ WA (not verified)     Sat, 03/28/2020 @ 12:39am

Only strict adherence to the govt directives - social distancing and the curfew will slow down the spread of Covid-19.
Covid-19 is NO JOKE.
The US, Italy, Spain are overwhelmed -
Italy, like China, instituted extremely tough and brutal control of their populations - including enforcement of stay home orders incl physically beating citizens.
Kenya has no health resources to deal with a massive uncontainable - so why are people b**tching about irresponsible Kenyans' not heeding govt orders?
Kila mtu akae nyumbani - and obey the law- period !!

Ex diasporan (not verified)     Sat, 03/28/2020 @ 01:27am

I left work at 5pm and I was at home at 6.30pm.The police should get more whips and teach these ignorant Kenyans a lesson, before Corona kills them. The police are saving their lives.

Guest (not verified)     Sat, 03/28/2020 @ 03:17am

Better than having 1000 people die a day like what is happening in some “developed countries”.Not only do we not have the hospital beds but we will start burying people in sheets in mass graves like they were doing in Rwanda .By any means necessary.Africa and specifically Kenya needs to survive this .Their wounds will heal and they will not dare be out after curfew better wounded but alive .

Omosh (not verified)     Sat, 03/28/2020 @ 08:13am

This is the only one time I support efforts of Kenyan police. I am not sure how else will Kenyan citizens learn that COVID is a matter of Public Safety. By no means is Kenya ready to deal with this virus. Simple “shelter in order” is needed and only way to slow down the transmission. There comes a time when Laws and constitution will DO NOTHING to fight the such a pandemic. China, US and other countries are doing this only difference Kenyans are stubborn and so illiterate to understand this virus can bring down the whole country. Sacrifice 2 weeks and our lives will go back to normal. Uhuru I support your efforts in fighting this virus and if I were in your position I would shut down the country in total lock down and give wananchi small economic relief while the remain in shelter in order..
