Murang’a Governor Mwangi wa Iria has built a 35-bed capacity intensive care unit (ICU) within a period of 21 days.

Governor Mwangi commissioned the construction of the ICU facility at Murang’a Level 5 Hospital on April 9th and on Friday, May 1st, the unit was fully completed and ready to admit patients.

Governor Mwangi said the county government resolved to use its engineers in order to accelerate the construction of the facility instead of going through the normal tendering process.

“If we opted to go through the normal tendering process, construction of this facility could take not less than two years and the pricing could be enormous,” said Mwangi.

j

Construction works were done on a 24-hour basis under the supervision of Murang’a county engineers to ensure the structure meets the required building standards.

Materials for construction were sourced locally and local residents were mobilized to provide labor in the building of the ICU facility, which is said to be the second-largest in the country after Kenyatta National Hospital’s (KNH) ICU center.

k

Governor Mwangi said the facility will offer critical care services during and after the Covid-19 pandemic.

“This facility will not only serve residents of Murang’a but anyone in need of critical care services across the country. The cost will be minimal considering this is a public facility,” he noted.

“This time the country is facing a threat of Coronavirus; this ICU will play an integral part in the provision of critical care unit. The facility is free to get referrals from other counties,” he added.

Congrats @WaIria! I say ✔!

You mean we've been having sleeping giants? Does it mean that government red-tape is self-defeating, expensive and counterproductive?
Or is it made that way on purpose.....to facilitate eating? Time to re-evaluate --- and maybe time for counties to dance to their own tune.

KEMSA is a den of corruption....and it is known. Abolish KEMSA!!!!!

The article says "the unit was fully completed and ready to admit patients." There are no two ways about it. It is not an ICU facility. A few weeks back KTN showed a hospital ward in war torn Syria and it was better eqipped than this ICU room.

Actions speak volumes. Hopefully you can bring more vital amenities to Muranga just like Peter Kenneth did to Gatanga. I take out my hat for you Mwangi. Good job.

Go, Wa Iria go...
If the country had only 5 of you, we wouldn't be a third country.
Hopefully, you will equip this ICU so that you wouldn't have to go abroad in the future for a wound dressing.
This a record 21-day project... So proud of you!!!!!
