Gor Mahia Edge Leopards 1-0 in Mashemeji Derby to Extend Lead

Gor Mahia defeated AFC Leopards 1-0 on Sunday at Nyayo National Stadium, with captain Alpha Onyango scoring late to extend their lead at the top of the FKF Premier League to six points.

The win moves Gor Mahia closer to a 22nd league title, leaving them on 61 points with five matches remaining, while Leopards stay second on 55. The match was the 99th edition of the Mashemeji derby and drew a crowd that exceeded the stadium’s official capacity of 18,000.

Gor Mahia controlled much of the first half and created several chances, ending a recent run of three matches without scoring. However, they were kept at bay by AFC Leopards goalkeeper Humphrey Katasi, whose performance included a series of strong saves and clear command of his area.

The decisive moment came in the 83rd minute when Onyango reacted quickly to a loose ball inside the penalty area and struck a low shot past Katasi. The goal secured all three points for Gor Mahia and dealt a setback to Leopards in the title race.

For AFC Leopards coach Fred Ambani, the defeat marked his first loss in the derby as a manager. He had previously recorded three wins and a draw in the fixture during his playing career. Gor Mahia coach Charles Akonnor celebrated the result with supporters after the final whistle.

Supporters from both sides created a lively atmosphere in the stands. Organised fan groups displayed banners, lit flares, and led chants throughout the match. Vendors also filled the terraces, adding to the event’s busy setting.

The result strengthens Gor Mahia’s position at the top of the table and gives them a clear advantage in the closing stages of the season.
