Estranged Wife Sues Former MP Peter Kaindi for Bigamy Following Second Wife's Death

Agnes Mueni, the estranged wife of former Kathiani MP Peter Kaindi has sued the politician, accusing him of bigamy.

In a case filed at a Machakos court, Mueni wants Kaindi to publicly disown his marriage to his second wife Judith Ndunge Ngunia, who died of cancer on April 16th. She accuses Kaindi of marrying Judith while Judith was still legally married to another man - Geoffrey Bitok, with whom they had a son together.

Mueni says she got married to Kaindi at St Peter’s Claver’s Catholic Church, Nairobi, on May 9th, 1987. She adds that they had been betrothed through a Kamba customary ceremony before the church wedding.

“Take notice that we have instruction to notify you that the alleged marriage to the said Judith Ndunge Ngunia is and was unlawful and illegal and in fact, you have committed a criminal offense of bigamy,” Mueni’s application reads.

Mueni is seeking to block Kaindi from burying Judith on a piece of land in Mavoko, which she claims they acquired jointly.

She is also opposing plans by Kaindi to visit the family of Judith to conduct ‘Ntheo’, a traditional Kamba rite that okays burial.

Mueni claims Kaindi deserted her in 1999, two years after she helped him win the Kathiani Parliamentary seat in 1997. The two had three children.

“He deserted me from 1999 and during the time of our marriage up to date, we jointly acquired a lot of properties,” she adds.

Kaindi has been living with Judith, a former employee of the Foreign Affairs Ministry, for the past 15 years.

@ Viazi Karai, hey random or not,the thought,Iam sure crosses alot of minds. And that is to,or not to tie the knot. Getting married is just a legal, cultural, and to some a religious way of saying come-we-stay.
As for problems, they will always occur, and when in marriage they are termed marital problems. And when dating they are called courtship problem.Same monkey in a different forest as some may use this metaphor...

Maxiley, marriage is a legal document that ties feelings and assets. If the union is no longer tenable, a process to divide whatever was acquired and assume responsibility of raising children in the union often follows. May I add that going separate ways is often messy and emotionally draining. The rate at which this union fails leads me to think that government issued document to signify a union no longer makes sense. There I said, marriage has outlived its usefulness which I doubt ever existed.

I concur.I have said before that, we tend to tick to this old habits just because they worked at one time.Traditions die hard as they say. We need anew model of "marriage" that fits today's way of life. I read somewhere that people in Sweden hardly marry any more. And in Norway, the gov. was paying people to have kids...
Marriage as we know it today is a "prison",of sorts.

Is Kenya not a polygamy state where a man can marry as many wives as possible? So what is this bigamy stuff?
