US-Based Loyola University to Set Up a Sh2.7 Billion University in Nakuru
Chicago-based Loyola University has begun plans to set up a campus in Kenya, which will serve the East African region.
The campus is being built on a 75-acre parcel of land in Molo, Nakuru County at a cost of Sh2.7 billion ($24 million), Nation reports.
Rev Dr. Kizito Kiyimba, a representative of the university who is spearheading the project, said the university will offer programs including data science and business studies, with a focus on entrepreneurship, education, science, engineering, among others.
"The university has over 250 learning institutions across the world, with 20 in the US. The Molo one will serve Kenya and the larger East Africa region," Dr. Kizito told Nation.
The institution will be constructed in three phases, with the first one beginning in June this year and ending by December 2023 while the other two will be completed by 2024.
Nakuru Governor Lee Kinyanjui pledged his support for the project when he met a delegation from the Catholic-run university.
"My administration will fully support the establishment of the university, which I believe will change lives in Kenya and East Africa. We welcome its construction because learning institutions are drivers of development," said Governor Kinyanjui.
He added: "With the establishment of the university, Molo has distinguished itself as the hub for international learning institutions, including St Andrews Turi International School.”
Founded in 1870 by the Society of Jesus, Loyola is one of the largest Catholic universities in the United States. It offers over 80 undergraduates and 140 graduate/professional programs.

Do you realize that this great project should be met with mixed reactions? Why? The embassy will have a great excuse to deny Kenyans VISAs to the US. Why go abroad if you can find the necessary education within they will ask. It’s happened to other countries.

@ GG, I dont know if you are aware that american collages and universities have apreset quota for the percentage of interenational students they will accept in any given school year.So the only effective way to deny VISA is to reduce this quota. Remember foreign students are financial boon to universities and collages in USA...

Truth be told,even in your own house, you do not let mgeni dictate terms that will be favorable only to him,even if he/she dangles a carrot you should not take unfavorable terms.
These Western countries,plus Chinese are in Africa solely for their self interest first,followed by goodwill.Ask yourself,"why would China invest so heavily in africa? Dont tellme they are driven by altruistic acts for of concern for humanity.

I love the Jesuit's charisms. They are a blessing to us Kenyans knowing their depth in investing in intellectual capacity. I welcome the idea more so bringing it down to earth in the rural settings of Molo. remember economic activities will flourish also through these establishments creating job opportunities, property development, agricultural supplies etc., and more affordable education opportunities reducing the cost of traveling to Loyola in USA.
