Kenya to Host 2025 CECAFA Women’s Championship

Kenya to Host 2025 CECAFA Women’s Championship

Nairobi is set to host the 2025 Council for East and Central Africa Football Associations (CECAFA) Women’s Championship from 4 to 16 September, following a relocation from the originally designated venue of Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.

The decision, announced by CECAFA Competitions Director Yusuf Mossi, marks a return to Kenya, which hosted the inaugural tournament in 2021. The eight-team competition will showcase club teams from Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Zanzibar, South Sudan, Tanzania, and Ethiopia, alongside the host nation's Kenya Police Bullets FC.

Sudan, Somalia, Eritrea, and Djibouti will not be participating. Kenya Police Bullets FC, as domestic league champions, will be aiming to improve upon their previous performance after narrowly missing out on continental qualification last year, when they were defeated in the final by Ethiopia’s Commercial Bank of Ethiopia (CBE) FC.

A victory would secure them a second opportunity to compete in the CAF Women’s Champions League. CECAFA has adjusted the tournament schedule to accommodate the FIFA U20 Women’s World Cup qualifiers, allowing eligible players to participate in both events.

Potential venues, including Nyayo Stadium and Moi International Sports Centre, are under consideration but remain unconfirmed. The inaugural 2021 tournament saw Vihiga Queens clinch the title, subsequently representing CECAFA in the CAF Women’s Champions League.
