Kibera Slum Will Be an Estate in 10 Years, Says President Ruto
President William Ruto has unveiled his ambitious plan to completely transform the Kibera slum in Nairobi into a thriving estate.
During a Sunday service at Deliverance Church International in Lang'ata, Ruto conveyed his optimism that in the upcoming ten years, Kibera would become a respectable residential area no longer plagued by poverty. He emphasized that the main objective of the Housing Project is not just to provide housing, but also to create employment opportunities. Ruto reiterated the ambitious plan to build 200,000 houses in Kenya within the next five years, sharing that this initiative would not only be beneficial in providing living space but will also improve the quality of life for the average Kenyan by providing crucial amenities like water, reliable electricity and efficient connectivity by establishing proper roads. In doing so, Ruto believes that the project would generate employment opportunities for the youth.
The President observed that there are 70,000 units currently under construction throughout the country. An allocation of Sh35.2 billion was made for the housing program. In his budget proposal in June, Treasury CS Njuguna Ndung'u mentioned that the government had gathered resources to support the construction of affordable and social housing units. He further announced that Sh3.2 billion from the housing budget would be designated for the affordable housing program. This aligns with President Ruto's objective of providing 200,000 affordable housing units to Kenyans each year.
"To achieve the delivering of 250,000 housing units yearly and to ensure this initiative is a success, I propose the national assembly to effect the budget allocation of 35.2 billion for the housing programme," Ndung'u said.

Upgrading infrastructure without upgrading Wananchi pockets Employment wise.. seems too casual hao watu wote sio kupenda they are the one thriving the economy ile kidogo wanapata they buy goods and services which you have increased taxes on..lets say those houses minimun rent is 10k how many will afford..there will be another slum to fit their pockets. Can you empower counties to train those youths in IT, Plumbing, welding, electrician, customer care, hospitality, carpeters, fundi wa mawe glass tiles etc, make sure every youth has a marketable skill.. create conditions for investors hata recycling trash will create reasonable employment, Come on Sir.

People who work need affordable housing.Yes,rent and mortgage take a big chunk out of workers' income.So It would be a big relief if they could have living places they can afford,that are decent,and aesthetically attractive as well.
I assume that Kibera slum dwellers live there because the rent aligns with their pockets.Will this Ruto-project factor that in their equation...?If not,these people will just create another slum somewhere else.
