Kenya Pursues Major Labor Deal with Qatar for 300000 Job Opportunities

Kenya is embarking on an ambitious initiative to significantly increase its workforce presence in Qatar.

The government aims to send 300,000 workers to the Gulf nation, a substantial increase from the current 67,000. This plan was unveiled by Labour and Social Protection Cabinet Secretary Alfred Mutua during a meeting with Qatar's Labour Minister Dr Ali Saeed Samikh Al-Marri in Doha. The Kenya Kwanza administration views international employment opportunities as a key strategy for stimulating economic growth and job creation. Discussions between the two countries are centred on revising a bilateral agreement initially signed in 2012 which would pave the way for more Kenyans to seek employment across various sectors in Qatar.

The Arab nation has expressed keen interest in attracting skilled workers from Kenya, particularly in fields such as information and communication technology, transport, and education. Kenya's reputation for providing quality labour in healthcare, education, and construction has made it an attractive partner for Qatar. As Qatar continues to invest in large infrastructure projects and expand its educational and healthcare systems, the demand for qualified professionals has surged and created opportunities for Kenyan workers to fill critical roles. To address the often lengthy and bureaucratic visa application process, plans are underway to establish a Qatar visa centre in Kenya.

This move is part of President William Ruto's broader strategy to open up more employment opportunities for Kenyans overseas. The Ruto administration has been proactive in seeking labour agreements with various countries to ensure Kenyans have access to jobs in international markets. The government's efforts extend beyond Qatar, with initiatives to strengthen ties with other Gulf nations and diversify the destinations for Kenyan workers.
