Raila Supports Demolition of Kisumu's 'Killer' Roundabout After Deadly Crash

A tragic bus accident at the Coptic Roundabout on the Kisumu-Kakamega highway, which claimed 27 lives, has sparked urgent calls for action on road safety in Kisumu County.

The devastating crash has highlighted long-standing concerns about the dangerous intersection, leading to the overnight demolition of the roundabout by unidentified individuals. The grief following the incident turned to action after a mass funeral in Nyakach for 22 of the victims. The solemn service, attended by thousands, including former Prime Minister Raila Odinga, brought national attention to the deadly intersection.

Odinga, who shared a personal near-miss at the same spot decades ago, emphasized the roundabout’s notorious history as an accident blackspot. The crash, which involved multiple members of the same family, has galvanized the local community to demand changes to prevent further loss of life.

The Coptic Roundabout, located just outside Kisumu city, has long been criticized for its hazardous design, including a dangerous slope and poor visibility. While it remains unclear who demolished the roundabout, the act is widely seen as a frustrated response to years of inaction.

Local leaders, including Kisumu Governor Anyang’ Nyong’o and various Members of Parliament, have expressed solidarity with the victims’ families and pledged to allocate resources for their support. In response to the growing pressure, the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) has sent engineers to assess the site and begin redesign work.

Regional Commissioner Florence Mworoa has confirmed the release of emergency funds to expedite the reconstruction. The redesign will focus on improving the slope and visibility, which have been identified as major factors contributing to frequent accidents at the roundabout.
