KNEC Tells Schools to Stop Publishing Fake KJSEA Rankings

The Kenya National Examinations Council (KNEC) has warned schools against publishing misleading analyses of the recently released Kenya Junior School Education Assessment (KJSEA) results.

The council stressed that such practices could undermine the Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC). KNEC criticised institutions for presenting results in terms of aggregate scores and school mean scores, methods associated with the old examination system.

The council emphasised that the new assessment model, which aims to focus on individual competencies, is incompatible with ranking systems. Under the CBC, each subject is assessed independently, and performance is reported through defined levels rather than numerical totals.

This approach, KNEC explained, is designed to recognise students' strengths in specific areas, without diminishing their achievements in others. The council also clarified that there is no longer a concept of a school mean score, urging schools and parents to rely on official communication for guidance on interpreting the results.

Any attempts to rank schools or calculate averages are considered inaccurate and misleading. The warning comes amid ongoing debate over the CBC, with many parents and educators grappling with its impact.

KNEC has reiterated its commitment to preserving the integrity of the national assessments and ensuring that misinformation does not erode confidence in the system. A total of 1,130,459 candidates participated in the 2025 KJSEA, including 578,630 boys (51.19 percent) and 551,829 girls (48.81 percent).

However, KNEC maintains that success should not be measured by numerical comparisons, but by the diverse talents and competencies students demonstrate.
