Florida Suspects Arrested Over $500,000 Burglary at Home of Kenya Crash Victims
Two suspects have been arrested in Florida over the alleged burglary of the home of two men who died in a helicopter crash in Kenya last week.
Coral Gables police said a 40-year-old man and a 24-year-old woman were arrested after investigators linked them to the burglary at the residence of Henry Parra, 55, and Adam Hlavaty, 42. Parra and Hlavaty were among seven people killed when a Eurocopter EC130 B4 crashed at Mt Ololokwe in Samburu County on 19 August.
Police said the burglary occurred less than a day after news of the crash became public. The suspects are accused of stealing artwork, jewellery, electronics, business records and cash, with the total loss estimated at about US$500,000.
They are also accused of taking the victims’ Land Rover and Porsche SUV.
Detectives reportedly traced the suspects after receiving a signal from a laptop that was stolen during the burglary. The information led to their arrests.
The two suspects appeared in court and were denied bond.
A family friend described the condition of the property after the break-in, saying the security system had been disabled and the front door was badly damaged. A neighbour also provided police with surveillance footage showing the suspects leaving the residence. The footage is being used as evidence in the case.
The deaths of Parra and Hlavaty were part of a wider tragedy that claimed seven lives. Among those killed was pilot Josh Outram, a veteran aviator with longstanding ties to Kenya’s conservation sector.
The helicopter was travelling from Loisaba Conservancy towards the Ewaso Nyiro River when it crashed. The Kenya Civil Aviation Authority confirmed that the aircraft was registered as 5Y-GYM.
The Air Accident Investigation Department is leading investigations into the crash. The cause of the accident has not yet been determined. The burglary has added another ordeal for the families dealing with the deaths of their relatives, as investigators in Kenya continue to establish what caused the helicopter crash.
