Sudan: Fighting, Road Closures Raise Fears of Imminent Famine in Sudan's Kordofan

In West Kordofan, Sudan, fears of a looming famine are escalating amidst ongoing conflict and infrastructural disruptions. The Kordofan Observatory has reported alarming signs of food scarcity in the region, particularly affecting the localities of El Nahud, Wad Banda, El Khuwei, and Muglad. Families in these areas have been forced to rely on 'ambaz,' the residual byproduct left after pressing groundnuts for oil, as their primary sustenance, underscoring the severity of the crisis.

The conflict between armed groups and government forces has led to widespread road closures, further exacerbating access to essential supplies. "The situation is dire," stated a spokesperson from the World Food Programme. "We are facing significant challenges in delivering food aid due to the ongoing hostilities and logistical blockades."

The United Nations Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA) has echoed these concerns, emphasizing the need for immediate humanitarian intervention.
