Tanzania Mourns Death of President Samia’s Husband Hafidh Ameir Hassan

Tanzania is mourning Hafidh Ameir Hassan, the husband of President Samia Suluhu Hassan, who died on Monday morning while receiving treatment for heart complications in Zanzibar.

Vice-President Deogratius Ndejembi confirmed that Hassan died at Emilio Mzena Memorial Hospital at about 8am. Funeral preparations are under way in Kizimkazi, where the family is expected to hold the burial arrangements.

Hassan, an agricultural scholar and retired officer, largely kept away from public life despite his close association with the presidency. He was known for his quiet nature and preference for privacy, including after his wife became Tanzania’s first female president in 2021.

His low public profile meant that relatively little was known about him. However, his position carried historical significance as he became Tanzania’s first First Gentleman following Samia’s election to the presidency.

Hassan and President Samia were married in 1978 and had four children together. Their daughter, Wanu Hafidh Ameir, later entered politics and became a member of parliament.

He remained part of the family as Samia rose through Tanzania’s political ranks, including her years as vice-president before she assumed the presidency in 2021.

Tributes have come from across East Africa. Kenyan President William Ruto described Hassan as “a beloved father and Tanzania’s distinguished son” as he extended his condolences to President Samia and her family.

Hassan’s death brings an end to a life that combined academic work, public service and a strong commitment to family privacy. Funeral arrangements are continuing in Zanzibar as the country mourns Hassan alongside President Samia and their family.
