DCP Has No MP, Can’t Deliver – Mudavadi Says

Prime Cabinet Secretary Musalia Mudavadi has dismissed former Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua’s Democracy for the Citizens Party (DCP) as a political outfit without any real meaningful influence, urging residents of Malava to rally behind the United Democratic Alliance (UDA) in the upcoming November by-elections.

Speaking at a recent public empowerment forum, Mudavadi argued that UDA, the ruling party under President William Ruto, has the structures and track record needed to deliver development. He questioned the readiness of DCP to lead, suggesting it lacks both the political experience and grassroots support necessary to effectively represent the people of Malava. Though he did not directly mention Gachagua, the remarks were seen as a clear challenge to the former DP's efforts to promote DCP in the region.

The by-election, scheduled for 27 November, has become a high-stakes contest not just for local representation, but also as an early test of political strength ahead of the 2027 General Election. The outcome will serve as a key indicator of voter sentiment and party influence, particularly in western Kenya, where political allegiances often shift. Gachagua's decision to cut short a trip to the United States to support DCP’s candidate reflects the strategic importance of the race for his political relevance.

Mudavadi was careful to stress that his support for UDA should not be interpreted as an attempt to impose a candidate on the Malava electorate. He reiterated his belief in democratic choice, stating that residents have the final say on who should represent them. However, he encouraged UDA to present a strong candidate, emphasising the party's role in delivering national development goals.
