Gov't to Launch Four New Centers for Kenyans in the Diaspora to Acquire e-Passports

The government through the Immigration Department is set to open eight new centers where e-Passports will be issued as it seeks to beat the September, 2019 deadline for phasing out old generation passports.

Of the new centers, four will be based in the country while the other four will be launched in foreign countries to serve Kenyans in the diaspora.

At the moment, the digital passports are only being issued at the Immigration headquarters in Nyayo House, Nairobi.

The four centers outside the country will be opened in Europe, America and the Middle East regions as the government steps up efforts to ensure Kenyans beat the global deadline for the acquisition of the new tpassports.

Interior Cabinet Secretary Fred Matiang’i said the new centers will ensure Kenyans acquire the new generation passports easily without having to travel to Nairobi.

The smart passport has enhanced security features that make it easy to identify, track and clear travelers.

What is the emergency? Why not renew passports as they expire and for those who need to travel? It’s kind of interesting the way these decisions are made. Why not issuing the old passports , let people use them until expiry time . A total waste of money.
