96 MPs Sign Motion to Impeach National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich

At least 96 Members of Parliament have signed a motion seeking to impeach National Treasury Cabinet Secretary Henry Rotich.

The motion is being fronted by Kimilili MP Didmus Barasa who wants Rotich fired over gross misconduct and abuse of office. The charges are in relation to the importation of illegal sugar and Sh1.5 billion Ruaraka land saga.

"This is not a partisan game were are playing. The people who are signing are from different political parties and it is in the mood of the Members of Parliament to impeach the CS. We are just working on the facts that exist," Barasa told a local media outlet.

The MP accuses Rotich of issuing four gazette notices between September and October last year that opened the floodgates to the influx of contraband sugar in the country, some of which was found to have been laced with hard metals such mercury, lead and copper.

The Treasury CS also faces charges of unprocedurally authorizing payment of 1.5 billion shillings for the controversial Ruaraka land saga.

"CS Rotich is the one who authorized the payments for the Ruaraka land. The evidence is there and the money was wired to the accounts of the buyer. This man was paying for a peice of land that does not even exist."

"Even on the sugar imports, it is the gazette notice he issued that caused the huge problem and my motion is concrete. I am seeking to have as many signatures as possible before tabling the motion," stated Barasa.

The motion now requires 24 more signatures from MPs for it to be tabled on the floor of National Assembly.
