Police have seized a consignment of 1,000 illegally imported firearms at the Jomo Kenyatta International Airport (JKIA) in Nairobi.
Police say the automatic rifles were imported from Belgium by a local dealer whose license has been suspended by the Firearms Licensing Board (FLB) and are estimated to be worth Sh300 million.
The sophisticated FN Scar riffles were brought to the country by Sailesh Mistry of CatEyes Ltd. and have been detained at JKIA for non-compliance.
The FN SCAR is semi-automatic rifle manufactured in 2009 and is described as very effective and lethal in combat. The FN SCAR is designed in Belgium and manufactured in California, US.
One such gun costs around Sh310,000 and is mainly used by elite units such as United States Navy SEALs and US Marines. In Africa, only the Kenya Defense Forces (KDF) commando unit, the Special Forces (SF) is armed with these rifles.
Contacted by the Standard, the company behind the importation of the rifles declined to comment on the matter saying it would affect its business with the State.
“We dealers have been suspended until we are cleared. That is that. There is nothing big about it. You will put me in the limelight and the authorities might come for me and I don’t want anything like that to happen,” the firm told the Standard.

We have been duped to believe that all illegal guns are from Somalia.
All guns and ammunitions come from the Military Industrial Complex of the West. Somalia is only a panya root no the source.
What was the purpose of such guns if the government was not involved? . How were they shipped from US without clearances. Something fishy cooking her!. All illegal guns Worldwide must be eliminated!. This killings plus climate change is wiping up world population and if no action taken!, can imagine what will be.
And why not name tge Humans involved?

Whether the guns are illegal or legal, whether they are with the government or terrorists, we must realise they come from the same source. The beneficiary of our deaths and miseries remain the same. As we go to the grave mourning in misery to bury our loved ones, they go smiling and laughing all the bank. God give Kenya leaders not politicians. God help Kenya!!!
@Anonymous UI ,whether the dealers go to the bank crying,or laughing, the fact remains that we are killing ourselves. The dealer is just providing a convenient and modern way to eliminate an "enemy ".
Enemies have existed from the day Adam took a bit at the mackintosh-apple.
Iam hopeful that one day my religion SCIENCE will discover away to"fix" whatever it is that make homosapient destructive and hostile to his fellow man.Till then we'll have to do with weapons of mass destruction as deterrent.
@Maxilely, there is nothing serious to worry about. No one can destroy completely something they never created. They can only try. Times are changing and soon violence and money will be overtaken by peace and soul and all those things will be rendered useless.
NA BADO!!! As long as we are comfortable voting in worthless, unscrupulous, self-centered and corrupt leaders to the core, blood will be spilt. Kenya is no exception. These guns will end up in Kenyan streets mupende musipende. And then right before next elctions, chaos. We are so predictable, it's inevitable!
300,000,000 ÷ 1,000 averages to KShs.300,000 ($3,000) per weapon. Very powerful Weapons; high Calibre.
