500 Drunk Kenyan Drivers Arrested in Alco-Blow Swoop

More than 500 people have been arrested in a police operation targeting drunk-drivers across the country.

Inspector General of Police Joseph Boinnet says 100 of them were arrested in Nairobi on Saturday morning while the rest were arrested in different areas across the country on Saturday night.

“We are going to sustain this operation which will be done even during the day,” Boinnet tells Capital FM News.

Boinnet has warned that those caught driving while drunk risk having their licenses withdrawn. 

“Those found driving while drunk risks having their licenses suspended. If we get you, it will not be pleasant,” he warns.

The arrests come a week after Boinnet launched daytime alco-blow tests targeting motorists driving while drunk during the festival season.

"It is really aimed at getting rid of drunks hitting the road early morning while still groggy and not being in full charge of their faculties, hence risks killing themselves, or worse still murdering other innocent people," Boinnet said.

"We have changed tact, those expecting us to do the drunk test in the night, we will also do the test in other hours of the day. We will particularly conduct tests in the morning. People have gotten used to finding alco-blow officers at on the highway at the late hours of the night and by 2 or 3 am in the morning they are gone, not anymore."
