President Kenyatta on Wednesday directed the Interior Ministry to constitute a Special Enforcement Unit to enforce compliance with Covid-19 protocols at the national and county level.

Members of the special unit will be drawn from the National Police Service, the national administration, and County Inspectorate.

“To enforce compliance at both the National and County level, I direct that the Ministry of Interior constitutes a Special Enforcement Unit made up of the National Police Service, National Government Administration Officers and supplemented by the County Government inspectorate units to jointly enforce compliance to COVID Protocols,” said Uhuru.

“If the nation is succumbing to the fatigue created by the virus, it would be a tragedy if the leaders give in to the weariness as well.  And if the people have fallen short of giving their best at this time, we the leaders have no option but to give our all.  We must know the way, go the way, and show the way,” he added.

Uhuru announced a list of new measures aimed at combating the impending second wave of Covid-19.

He adjusted the nationwide curfew from 11 pm down one hour to 10 pm, ending at 4 am, and extended it to January 3rd, 2020.

“October has gone down as the most tragic month in our fight against COVID-19,” Kenyatta said.

Uhuru further ordered operators of hotels, restaurants, eateries, nightclubs, and bars to close by 9:00 pm and ensure enhanced compliance with the Health Ministry guidelines, failure to which the establishment will be shut down. All political gatherings and rallies in the country were also banned for 60 days effective immediately.
