EACC Goes After Migori Governor Okoth Obado's Sh34 Million Nairobi Mansion

The Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) has filed a fresh court application seeking to have a Sh34.5 million house linked to Migori Governor Okoth Obado frozen.

EACC wants the court to issue a six-month preservation order blocking the sale or transfer of the property located in Nairobi’s Loresho suburb as investigations against Governor Obado continue.

Obado is accused of embezzling Sh2 billion from Migori County government coffers through proxies and relatives between 2013 and 2017. Daily Nation reports that the mansion is registered under the name of Jared Peter Kwaga, one of Obado’s proxies.

EACC believes the money used to acquire the property was part of the Sh2 billion loot. Kwaga is accused of incorporating several companies to irregularly trade with the Migori County government.

Investigations by EACC revealed the tenant of the Loresho Ridge House No C1 LR No 21080/38 had been remitting rent to Governor Obado’s daughter, Evelyne Zachary.

EACC further believes that two Landcruisers owned by Obado's children, Dan Achola and Jerry Zachary are proceeds of crime and wants them frozen for six months.

The anti-graft agency has extended investigations to the UK and Australia, where Obado's children received money from companies associated with him. The children were studying in the two countries at the time.

"The Commission, due to the new discovery, requires more time to further investigate the respondents and their dealings or collusion with a view of tracing the process of illicit wealth gained from fraudulent transactions," an EACC investigator said.

The more than Sh2 billion was allegedly paid to companies owned Obado’s close relatives including Kwaga and his wife Christine Akinyi, Patroba Ochanda, Joram Opala, Penina Auma Otago, Carolyne Onyago.

Give Mr.Ibado a chance to come clear in exchange for a"lighter punishment",but If EACC has to spend so much resources to uncover what is stubbornely hidden, lap 20 more years to the final verdict.
