Police Officer Killed After Al-Shabaab Militants Attack Patrol Base in Garissa
One police officer was on Wednesday killed after suspected Al-Shabaab militants attacked Amuna police patrol base in Fafi, Garissa County.
Reports indicate the heavily armed gunmen stormed the base and opened fire at law enforcement officers stationed there.
This led to a fierce shootout that lasted 15 minutes before the insurgents retreated after being overpowered.
The attackers are said to have used a rocket-propelled grenade to hit the base’s armory causing serious damages. They also fired at a Land Cruiser vehicle that was parked at the base, deflating all its four wheels.
One officer sustained gunshot wounds on his arm and back during the shootout, Garissa County Police Commander Emmanuel Opuru said.
The officer was rushed to a Garissa hospital where he is undergoing treatment and is in stable condition.
Security officers also launched a search for one of their colleagues who could not be traced after the ambush.
“After sensing that we had overwhelmed them, the terrorists escaped. We have launched a spirited search for him,” one of the officers told a local news outlet.
