Kenyan Taxpayers to Fork Out Millions to Buy Laptops for MPs in New Proposal

Kenyan taxpayers may be forced to cough millions of shillings for the purchase of free laptops for MPs if a new proposal is adopted.

The parliamentary Broadcasting and Library Committee tabled a report in the National Assembly last week recommending the acquisition of laptops to enable MPs to participate in virtual meetings in the wake of the prevailing COVID-19 pandemic.

If MPs approve the report, taxpayers will shoulder the burden of acquiring laptops for 350 members of the National Assembly.

“The committee recommends that the National Assembly should consider facilitating members of the National Assembly with laptops for the conduct of virtual meetings,” the committee says in the report tabled in Parliament last Thursday.

The committee indicated that MPs preferred laptops to iPads for virtual meetings. The recommendation follows findings of a task force appointed to explore a possible technology solution suitable for the House to conduct its business while adhering to protocols on containment of COVID-19.

It will cost about Sh105 million to acquire the gadgets assuming each MP gets an Apple MacBook Pro that goes for up to Sh300,000. The budget excludes the cost of buying laptops for the 68 Senators, including the speaker.

Kenyan MPs earn at least Sh1.3 million per month including allowances, making them among the world’s best-paid lawmakers

For instance, MPs pocket Sh5,000 per committee sitting, with the chair taking home Sh10,000 and Sh7,500 for vice-chairpersons. Other perks include domestic subsistence of Sh19,000, house allowance of Sh250,000, and Sh10 million annual medical cover. They are also entitled to a Sh5 million car grant, a Sh20 million mortgage, and a Sh7 million car loan.

Pretty ridiculous for a common Joe to pay too much taxes to buy a laptop for his MP. This is the most ridiculous stealing tactic I have ever heard of! Have these people have no shame?

@kk - I don’t want to comment on it either but I think Kenyans should take machetes and equalize these thieving MPs!

DP Ruto taught them very well how to steal from poor people - the wheelbarrow shitheads! What a freaking shame! I’m pissed off! Uhuru should veto this shit!

Ruto is just a more entrenched thief but is not responsible for MP's greed. All politicians including Uhuru and Raila condone this looting by MPs because they want support their own thieving policies like bbi and incessant borrowing-to-pocket!

The proposal must and should be rejected! These mp dogs are out there to bankrupt wananchi! The proposal should not see the light of day! Tax payers must resist this stupid move. The MPs should buy their own laptops with their own money!

All the MPs know is to impregnated house maids! That is how these MPs with questionable moral characters have gotten! They are all rotten.

An mp used to be a respected member of the community! Not any more!

There are women MPs/gangsters who can never fuck leave alone impregnating their house girls(who-99%.are qualified wife material). There are so many Kenyans who have never respected these MPs-thugs.Only a fool can respect a thug stealing from him/her.

The MPs never attended meetings before Covid. Let them not lie to us they will be disciplined enough to attend sessions on laptops.

Actually, we should fire all of them and return to the days chiefs took care of local issues! It will save the country some ton load of money to be used for development projects!

These pigs are the worst sort of animals in the history of man kind!

Nahofia "Imara Daima," "Kora Kanini", "Maxiley", JustMe", "Mundumugo" na "Mkenya Halisi" wakiuliza "Mjuaji" mbona wabunge hawa wanaangushwa na kufunikwa kaburini moja moja bila arifa yoyote? Mmmmmm!

Curious why they can't pay for their own laptops or why it has to be a MacBook Pro given their generous compensation. Will the computers remain the property of the Kenya government? My work laptop remains the property of the company and can be accessed by the company at any time. If I leave the company, the laptop is still their property and can be recycled for someone else.

The MPs preferred laptops to IPads for virtual meetings.Stay home or simply resign why do you need the laptop when most of you can hardly even use an IPad .What important meetings are these that cannot wait till Covid subsides..Normally when in session most of you are present physically but on your phones others do not even bother to contribute and the rest simply do not show up.Regular folk have to use firewood now that the price of cooking gas is through the roof and you speak of upgrading your iPads why not just send all of you home and concentrate on next year’s elections .Use the money for campaigns instead.Thieves

Folks, any right thinking Kenyan should be sickened by this proposal.I keep asking myself how did they get to the point of being some of the highest paid legislators in the world? How did that happen? Kenya a "thirdworld" country cannot afford that. The most disappointing part is that the high salary, and benefits are not commensurate with their service they provide.
This is serious.By giving them all this big monies, for the little they do compels them to improvise ways of wasting that money.Yes on Mipango ya kando, driving big cars, partying too much...And I dont blame these side chicks demanding millions for child support. The problem is that,we end up paying for the Mpigs bad decisions.
If they are serious about serving the public, then,we should slash their benefits by 50%.That still leaves avery substantial amount to satisfy their financial needs, including their high maintenance young things. Anything more is being greedy, and criminal.
So this should be one of the conditions for making them earn your Vote next year. Dont listen to them if they say, them more they earn, the more you will get from them,or sprinkle some paltry change. That's not how it works. They money they give you is actually yours, without interest
If they can run around chasing skirts, with Covid 19 restrictions, certainly they can do their work without taxpayer issued PCs.
We just read about a doctor operating on awoman while supporting her baby on her back.If Mpigs have any compassion, thats where the money should be going. This is amatter of life and death.Computers are actually a luxury if the dont have them by now.My vote is resounding NO,NO.And shame on them for wanting to overburden the taxpayers with non essentials. My two taxed cents.

I’m already sickened and my doctor can figure out why my sickness is coming from! I feel like I want to vomit every time MPs are mentioned!

This is blatant theft of our tax payers money! We should do away with the parliament and the senate because all they do is steal from the people!

other smaller countries launching big time technologies that touch security issues and economical solutions, here we are,the only thing we can be praised for is being among the best in paying these stupid pigs so called law makers

Why not use current phones and zoom?? That's more than enough.
Why do we need MP in times of devolution anyway? A super mca from each sub county can do that same job at a lower cost.

Comrade MjuAji,
I repeat what I had said before..
JOMO KENYATTA started corruption..
MOI perfected it...
KIBAKI was more interested in economics but didn't help either when it came to corruption.
UHURU KENYATTA had no clue as governance.
Think about the 2 billion KSH being stolen daily by our elected officials.
IT TIME FOR A REVOLUTION. IT'S TIME FOR CHANGE. IF WE HAVE TO TAKE THE ROUTE THAT HAITIANS DID....LET IT BE.

Kangogo must go to Haiti for further training. She can do her country a favor of taming these gangsters. She needs a week’s training on how to TAKE CARE OF BIGGER GROUPS.This might need bigger,high-tech weapon(s).

@ MjuAji:
