Nine Killed as Crane Collapses at a Construction Site in Hurlingham, Nairobi

Nine people were killed after a crane collapsed at a construction site in Hurlingham, Nairobi on Thursday.

Kilimani OCPD Andrew Mbogo, who confirmed the incident, said the victims include seven Kenyans and two Chinese nationals.

Mbogo indicated that the contractor was removing the crane after completing the outer works when the incident happened around midday.

Witnesses said the equipment was being dismantled when it crumbled about 70 meters down. Police and military personnel joined in the rescue efforts.

“Some people were up on the crane dismantling it when it crashed, it is like they did not balance the weight well and it is unfortunate because eight people are now dead and two have been taken to hospital,” a carpenter at the site Michael Odhiambo said.

The 14-storey building that was under construction is a hostel run by Qwetu Residences opposite Silver Springs Hotel, near Daystar University.
