Nairobi Expressway to be Closed Over the Weekend

Moja Expressway Company on Monday, June 26, announced that the 27-kilometre Nairobi Expressway will be shut down for 16 hours, beginning on Saturday, July 1 at 10:00 pm and ending on Sunday, July 2 at 4:00 pm. 

“Please note that the Nairobi Expressway will be temporarily closed from Saturday, July 1, 2023, at 10 pm to Sunday, July 2, 2023, at 4 pm as we host the 2nd edition of the Nairobi City Marathon,” the notice reads.

People who usually use the highway for their daily commute are advised to make alternate plans to avoid any inconvenience. Data from the company reveals that over 50,000 vehicles use the expressway on a daily basis, meaning that the closure will affect thousands of Kenyans. 

“The expressway will be closed to make way for the Nairobi City Marathon,” Moja Company explained. 

A city marathon organised by the Ministry of Sports and the Kenya National Highways Authority (KeNHA) is set to take place on the same stretch of road. The event will present local people with a special opportunity to run alongside professional athletes. As the marathon is 42 kilometres long, the entire highway from Westlands in Nairobi County to Mlolongo in Machakos County will be closed. 

“It is another chance to experience our great city as you run on the magnificent Nairobi Expressway,” the event sponsors touted the event. 

The event will be flagged off at Nyayo Stadium on Sunday at 9:30 am with all participants expected to register at the event. Drivers who had intended to use the road have the alternative of using other routes, such as the Nairobi-Mombasa Highway, Uhuru Highway, and Waiyaki Way.
