Meru County Assembly Deputy Speaker Mwenda Ali was on Tuesday involved in a head-on collision on the Meru-Embu road.
Sadly, his young daughter Mellisa Makena died in the accident. The incident occurred near Kivwe village in Embu County when Mr Ali's Subaru Legacy collided with a Toyota double cabin. Eyewitnesses reported that Mr Ali was travelling with two family members towards Nairobi at the time of the crash. The impact caused the Deputy Speaker's vehicle to erupt in flames, injuring his driver Michael Mwongera (35), and another two-year-old girl. The accident resulted in significant traffic congestion on the busy highway.
The survivors were rushed to the nearby Ena Hospital for initial treatment. However, their worsening conditions necessitated an airlift to Nairobi for specialized care. Witnesses described the horrific scene, recounting the loud crash and their immediate response. Local residents blocked the road in an attempt to help Mr Ali, his driver, and the two children.
"The sight of the Deputy Speaker's car engulfed in flames was horrifying," one witness recalled.
Embu County Commander Mr Nicholas Maina has reported that Mr Ali who had been seated in the front passenger seat sustained a deep forehead gash, a dislocated knee, and chest pain. Despite the severity of the accident, the Deputy Speaker remarkably survived and was airlifted to Nairobi alongside the other injured passengers. An investigation has been launched to determine the cause of the accident.
Mr Maina has also urged drivers to exercise caution on the route to prevent further tragedies. The Deputy Speaker's car was heavily damaged and impounded at the Embu West police station for examination. The area has been deemed a black spot by locals who responded to the incident, prompting a plea for drivers to exercise caution when nearing that location.
Another witness lamented, "This is the worst accident we've seen in this area in recent times."
