Oburu Odinga: No Formal Talks Between ODM and UDA Yet
Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) leader Oburu Odinga has stated that no formal talks have begun between ODM and the United Democratic Alliance (UDA), dismissing reports that negotiations had stalled.
Speaking to the press in Kisumu on Friday, Oburu said claims of a breakdown in discussions were inaccurate. He explained that while there is a cordial relationship between ODM and UDA leaders, no formal steps, such as forming negotiation teams, have been taken. He indicated that speculation has moved ahead of actual political developments.
Oburu confirmed that he maintains a constructive working relationship with President William Ruto, who leads UDA. However, he stressed that personal relations should not be mistaken for official party negotiations. He appeared to caution against raising expectations within either party before any structured engagement begins.
He also criticised some UDA leaders, accusing them of making inroads into areas traditionally considered ODM strongholds. Referring to the issue of “zoning,” he highlighted a common practice in Kenyan coalition politics where parties seek to maintain influence in specific regions. His remarks suggested that such actions could strain relations and complicate any future cooperation.
Within ODM, Oburu addressed speculation about potential presidential candidates. He reaffirmed that the party’s constitution designates the party leader as its presidential flagbearer.
