UK-trained Jaini Shah Takes Kenyan Craftsmanship to International Markets

Kenyan designer Jaini Shah is promoting locally made luxury furniture through her company, Kubuni, by combining contemporary design with traditional woodworking skills and responsibly sourced materials.

Shah, who was born and raised in Nairobi, founded Kubuni to bring Kenya's woodworking heritage to a wider international market. The company's name comes from the Swahili verb kubuni, meaning "to design" or "to create".

It reflects the company's aim of using design as both a creative process and a way to express cultural identity. Kubuni produces furniture that is designed not only for practical use but also to showcase the character and quality of Kenyan timber.

After studying product design and design management at Birmingham City University in the United Kingdom and gaining professional experience abroad, Shah chose to return to Kenya instead of building her career overseas. Her decision reflects a commitment to developing local talent and demonstrating that high-quality design can succeed within Africa.

She works closely with Kenyan fundis, whose woodworking skills have been passed down through generations, combining their craftsmanship with modern design methods. Kubuni's production process brings together computer-aided design and traditional woodworking.

Digital modelling provides technical precision, while artisans shape each piece to highlight the natural features of the wood. This approach produces furniture that combines modern design with handmade quality.

Every item is unique, reflecting both advanced technology and skilled craftsmanship rather than standardised mass production. The company's approach also supports local economic development.

Kubuni sources materials responsibly and places artisans at the centre of its manufacturing process, helping to strengthen local supply chains and create sustainable employment. This supports the goals of the "Buy Kenya, Build Kenya" initiative, which encourages investment in domestic industries to strengthen the country's economy.

Kubuni's work shows that locally produced furniture can compete in international markets while supporting Kenyan businesses and workers. Kubuni's work also reflects changing views of luxury.

Rather than relying on imported brands, the company focuses on products that represent local culture and craftsmanship. As demand increases for sustainable products with a clear sense of origin, Kubuni offers an example of how traditional skills can be adapted for modern markets.
