How Kenyan-German Artist Kipkemoi Henke Is Making His Mark in Los Angeles
Kenyan-German painter Kipkemoi Henke has established himself as one of the emerging artists in Los Angeles, using portraiture to explore identity, heritage and belonging across cultures.
Born in Cuxhaven, Germany, to a Kenyan mother and a German father, Henke has lived in Europe, Africa and the United States. His experiences across different countries have shaped both his identity and his artistic style. The name Kipkemoi, which means "born at night" in Kalenjin, reflects a journey that began outside traditional art institutions before gaining international recognition.
After completing university in Germany, Henke moved to Oakland, California, where he was inspired by the work of Black artists to begin painting. He taught himself the craft and developed a distinctive style that combines his Kenyan heritage with his European upbringing through expressive portraiture.
His paintings are recognised for their monochrome portraits of Kenyan subjects set against bold, single-colour backgrounds. By removing natural skin tones, Henke encourages viewers to focus on emotion rather than appearance. His work invites audiences to consider identity beyond race or nationality and instead connect with the shared experiences of his subjects.
Henke's career also reflects the importance of creativity and practical skills alongside formal education. Kenya's Competency-Based Curriculum (CBC) encourages students to develop individual talents and practical abilities. Although he did not study fine art, Henke has shown that originality and technical skill can lead to international success.
His achievements have been recognised through several major awards and exhibitions. In 2024, he won The Billboard Creative Award in Los Angeles, where his portraits were displayed on billboards across the city.
In 2025, his work featured in the Children of the Sun exhibition at Sotheby's Beverly Hills, which celebrated Black creativity and imagination. Later that year, he received the New Futures Award at The Other Art Fair, further establishing his reputation as an emerging artist.
Henke has also worked beyond the gallery space. The LA Lakers selected him for their In the Paint programme, incorporating his artwork into one of the United States' best-known sports organisations. These projects have introduced his work to wider audiences, including both the public and private collectors.
