The Pharmacy and Poisons Board (PPB) of Kenya has issued a public warning regarding a specific batch of Benylin Pediatric cough syrup.
The product in question, Batch No 329304 manufactured in South Africa, was recently recalled by the Nigerian regulatory body, the National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control (NAFDAC). Benylin Pediatric cough syrup is a medication used to suppress coughs. The recall stems from the discovery of high levels of diethylene glycol, a toxic substance posing a serious health risk to consumers, including potential death.
Symptoms of diethylene glycol poisoning can include abdominal pain, vomiting, diarrhoea, difficulty urinating, headaches, altered mental state, and potentially acute kidney damage. The PPB is currently investigating the distribution channels of the affected batch and has initiated a sampling program to further analyze the product. Based on the results of these laboratory tests, they will take appropriate regulatory actions. Additionally, all pharmacies have been instructed to immediately halt the distribution, sale, and dispensing of Benylin Pediatric cough syrup Batch No 329304.
"The public or patients who experience adverse reactions or events following the use of this product in children are advised to direct such patients to immediate medical attention from a qualified healthcare professional," says PPB in a statement.
The PPB urges anyone who has administered this product to their child and observes any negative reactions to seek immediate medical attention from a qualified healthcare professional. The organization emphasizes its commitment to ensuring the quality, safety, and efficacy of medications available in Kenya. They encourage the public to remain vigilant and report any suspected cases of poor-quality medicine or adverse drug reactions to their nearest healthcare facility and the PPB.
It seems everything badlands in Kenya. Corruption has really taken a hold on everything!
