Businessman Fatally Stabbed by Friend After Night Out in Nakuru

Businessman Kevin Makau, 32, was fatally stabbed during a visit to Nakuru County on the night of December 19, allegedly by his longtime friend, Seth Kiprop, 30.

The incident has left the local community and Makau's family reeling as they seek answers to this shocking act of violence. Makau travelled from his home in Kasarani, Nairobi, to visit Kiprop for an evening of dinner and drinks at a local entertainment venue, during which they watched a football match.

Upon returning to Kiprop’s apartment in the Eveready area shortly after midnight, a quarrel escalated into violence, leading to Kiprop allegedly stabbing Makau in the chest. Authorities confirm that Makau succumbed to his injuries at the scene. Nakuru West Sub-County Police Commander Anderson Njagi affirms that an investigation is underway to unravel the circumstances surrounding the altercation.

"We received a report from the apartment's caretaker on the afternoon of December 20. Upon arrival, officers discovered Kevin's body with a single stab wound," Njagi detailed.

Kiprop was taken into custody immediately following the incident and has since been charged. Law enforcement officials have been granted further time to complete their investigations. Family members express profound grief over Makau's death. His father, Joseph Makau Kitheka, shares the harrowing moment he learned of his son's death from a relative, stating,

"Kevin had gone to visit his friend, and now we are left with unanswered questions. He had a family and two children." Kitheka describes his son as humble and responsible, emphasizing the family’s demand for justice. Makau's wife, Gladys Kanana, recounts her last communication with him, noting that she spoke with him until 1 a.m. on the night of the incident, after which his phone suddenly went silent.

Kanana, who was visiting family in Bomet, revealed that Kevin had planned to return to Nairobi on December 24 to spend Christmas with her and their children. She expresses her worries about Kiprop’s influence on her husband, emphasizing that Kevin had not disclosed his travel plans. Margaret Wairimu, Kevin's mother-in-law, indicates that police had shown her security footage depicting the events of that night.

The footage captured Makau's arrival at Kiprop's apartment and documented interactions leading up to the tragic incident, including Kiprop appearing to speak on the phone for an extended period before returning inside. Moments later, Makau was seen signalling to the security guard before collapsing. As the investigation continues, Kevin Makau's family and friends are left grappling with their loss, seeking both answers and justice for his untimely death.
