A tragic incident occurred on Tuesday morning in the Kwadziwe area of Likoni, resulting in the death of 14-year-old Hamisi Ibrahim, a Grade 9 student at Mrima Primary School.
According to reports, Hamisi had just left his grandmother's house to meet friends when gunfire erupted, leading to him being found fatally wounded a few blocks away. Hamisi's mother, Ms. Fatuma Haji, describes her son as well-behaved and aspiring to be a farmer. She recounts the harrowing moment her family heard the gunshot and rushed outside to find chaos unfolding.
The police arrived shortly thereafter and transported Hamisi's body away from the scene. Ms. Fatuma expresses her bewilderment at the police's response, questioning why her son, who she insists was not a criminal, had not simply been apprehended if he had allegedly done something wrong.
Likoni Sub-County Police Commander Geoffrey Ruheni confirmed the events, stating that a distress call had been made to the Inuka Police Station at 9:18 a.m. regarding a robbery by armed individuals in the vicinity of Masjid Ghazal village. When police officers arrived, they encountered three juveniles armed with machetes, who allegedly threatened the officers.
A warning shot was fired when the juveniles failed to comply, but they continued their aggressive approach, resulting in Hamisi being shot while the other suspects managed to flee. Eyewitness accounts raised additional concerns, noting that the officers who discharged their weapons were not in uniform.
The police reported the recovery of a machete at the scene, which will be preserved as potential evidence. Mr. Ruheni reiterates the importance of parental involvement in preventing youth from engaging in criminal activities.
The incident has sparked outrage within the community and among Hamisi's family, who are demanding justice and clarification from authorities.
Hamisi's body has been transferred to the Coast General Teaching and Referral Hospital mortuary for a postmortem examination.
