A Nakuru family has joyfully reunited with their daughter, Baby Maya Kerubo, who had been missing for three months following her abduction by a stranger.
The incident began on January 8 when the toddler was lured away by an unidentified woman who offered snacks to her and her companions, subsequently vanishing. The resolution of this distressing case took place in Maili Kumi, located in Bahati Constituency, where Baby Maya was found. The suspect, who was captured on CCTV footage at the time of the abduction in Kwa Rhonda, has since been apprehended by local law enforcement.
The sequence of events leading to the recovery of Baby Maya commenced when her grandmother, Lilian Moraa, received an alarming phone call from a stranger inquiring about the missing child. The caller, later identified as the landlady of the abductor, had grown suspicious upon noticing that the suspect had suddenly acquired a child in October despite having no children of her own.
To confirm her suspicions, the landlady asked for a photograph of Baby Maya, which Moraa provided. After verifying the child's identity, the landlady promptly notified the police, setting in motion the actions that would lead to Baby Maya's discovery. Following this, Moraa and Baby Maya's mother, Maureen Gesare, gathered evidence of the child’s identity at Nakuru Nursing Home.
With a letter from the hospital in hand, they approached Kaptembwa Police Station, where they confirmed the child’s identity by recognizing a distinctive birthmark. During police investigations, the suspect confessed to abducting Baby Maya in an attempt to appease her husband, as they had been struggling with infertility for several years. Baby Maya was taken to a hospital for a thorough check-up before being safely returned to her family.
Despite the emotional turmoil caused by the ordeal, the family expresses heartfelt gratitude for the community's role in the search for Baby Maya. Maureen Gesare, who faced allegations of child trafficking during the abduction, joyfully celebrates her daughter's first birthday with a renewed sense of relief and emphasizes her commitment to always keep her child in sight.
