Major Projects Race to Completion as Homa Bay Prepares for Mashujaa Day

As anticipation builds for the 62nd Mashujaa Day celebrations in Homa Bay County on October 20, the Kenya Kwanza administration is accelerating key development initiatives in Luo Nyanza.

In preparation for this national event, the government is prioritizing the completion of substantial infrastructure projects. A prominent project nearing completion is the Homa Bay Affordable Housing Project, which President William Ruto inaugurated in 2023. This initiative aims to provide quality, affordable homes for residents, with the first phase expected to be ready for occupancy by March, as noted by Interior and National Administration Principal Secretary Raymond Omollo.

This housing project is aligned with the Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda (BETA) and is poised to stimulate local economic activity by creating job opportunities for both skilled and unskilled workers. Another significant advancement is the expansion of the Kabunde Airstrip, which is on schedule for completion before Mashujaa Day. This government-backed initiative is designed to enhance regional connectivity and spur economic growth. Planned upgrades include extending the runway, constructing turning loops, and installing a modern, durable surface in place of the existing tarmac.

The improvements to the airstrip are expected to generate jobs and provide lasting economic benefits by facilitating mobility and access to essential services. Furthermore, the enhanced airstrip will contribute to strengthening Kenya's aviation network, thus supporting ambitions to position the country as a regional hub for trade and tourism. Additionally, the Mbita Ring Road project, which was launched by President Ruto in August 2024, represents another crucial infrastructure development in the region.

Spanning 19.3 kilometres, the road is being constructed in three phases, with sections two and three close to completion. Upon finalization, the Mbita Ring Road is set to improve connectivity and transportation ease, unlocking new avenues for trade and tourism. This project holds particular significance for the local fishing industry which serves as the backbone of the region's economy.
